In his first release, Daryl Paul provides the listener with a depth of sound that is surprising for a singer songwriter wedded primarily to the guitar. He has developed a depth and richness of sound that leans to the orchestral. The classical listener will strain to hear components of the complex symphony. Yet, the folk/rock listener will hear the simple melancholy chords that make up his music.
His lyrics will touch a chord with all of us who search for meaning in our lives. He brings a philosophic yet poetic approach to his lyric writing. Like many songwriters of the folk/rock genre, the meanings are many, never simple, and never easy to interpret. Like the painter who does not reveal all, Daryl Paul, hints at his reality, his passions, his dreams, his inner spirits fighting to be free, to find direction, to find fulfillment. It is all there. Trust me—just listen to these two lines in Afterglow, “Drag your dreams into tomorrow. Drag your dreams and don’t refuse the helping hand.”
His voice reflects and contributes to the musical mood of his creations. It is soft and mellow, but at times surprises as it soars. You too will likely agree, that like the melancholy nature of the musical mood, he tends to hold back. On first reflection you may say, “sing out Daryl Paul, sing out.” However, on second reflection, you will be more comfortable with the value that he has settled on—it now seems right for his music.
