Formed in Vancouver in 2007 by Sally Jorgensen and Vanessa Turner, Petroleum By-Product took the name from the concept of the “Plastic Generation.” This refers to the idea that mankind is living in an entirely plastic world, dramatically altered since their invention. PBP’s music and attire reflect an artificial, superficial, excessive and decadent society and they visualize this development through black garbage bag clothing, extensive packaging, CD sunglasses and shoe design.
Turner and Jorgensen Performed first at an alternative high school talent show, which led quickly to Fake Jazz Wednesdays at the Cobalt. Despite being underage, they soon became favourites of the Emergency Room scene in Vancouver, where they were represented with two tracks on the ER compilation in 2008. That year they entered in CITR's annual “shindig” competition. As Gena Perala wrote in MV Remix Media “most of the bands [in Shindig] have been somewhat disappointing... however, that all changed when Petroleum By-Product hit the stage, donning trashy outfits.. plastic garbage bags with masking tape... the crowd was into them, I was into them, and you might get into them too...”
Petroleum By-Product placed third overall. They have now emerged as a headlining draw and have played virtually every venue in Vancouver, including Richards on Richards and the Vancouver Art Gallery. At the present time the band is moving in a more visceral direction with the introduction of drum machines and sequencers.
After self releasing their 12” vinyl record “Superficial Artificial” they are touring the west coast of Canada and USA and making a video with up and coming MTV award nominated director Davide Di Saro.
