THE BASICS:
Last year we had great success in finding some of the best rock n’ roll high schoolers out there. Since our Rock OTC contest, we’ve seen many of our contestants on stage listings across the lower mainland. As part of OTC’s ongoing commitment to playing the best “VanCon” (think CanCon, but with an emphasis on LOCAL), and the CBC’s overall support of the Canadian music industry, we want to do it again. But this time, we want to celebrate the great Canadian tradition of the singer/songwriter. Think Leonard Cohen, Sarah McLachlan, Rufus Wainwright, Sarah Harmer, Dan Mangan, City and Colour, and more.
If you have an instrument, a voice, and a great original song, we want to hear from you. We want to do this old school- so even if you sometimes play with a band, or use an electric keyboard, you need to go solo and acoustic for the contest. As for the style of music- that’s up to you!
TIMELINE:

TO ENTER:
1. Create an artist’s profile at www.radio3.cbc.ca. Make sure to upload your original song, as well as a photo and bio.
Songs should be no more than four minutes long. All songs must be composed by and be the original work of the contestant, and must not violate the rights of any third party. The recording must be you, your instrument, and nothing else. By submitting an entry, contestants assign all rights and waive any moral rights they may have in their texts. Contestants acknowledge that CBC may air this song in whole or in part, on any medium (radio, television, Internet or other).
2. Send an e-mail to onthecoast@cbc.ca to let us know you’re entering. Be sure to include your name, your age, which school you go to, and a brief bio. You’ll also need to include your contact information and the lyrics of the song you’ve uploaded.
3. Do all of this by 6 PM Pacific Time on Wednesday, October 13.
4. Tune in to On the Coast from 3 to 6 weekdays for tips from the experts, and to hear your song! We’ll announce the Top Ten finalists on Monday, October 18.
PRIZES:
Our final winner will get a day-long recording session with our CBC music producer, Jon Siddall, in our CBC music studios. They’ll end the day with a full radio-ready copy of their single. That song will then be featured on Radio 3 by host Lisa Christiansen.
The winner will also get one week at Canada's award winning Gulf Islands Film and Television School during Spring Break 2011 (full tuition ($685) and room & board ($295).
The Top Three finalists will get gift certificates to Long & McQuade.
