David Myles brings us back to the ’80s with his free-spirited “Simple Pleasures,” and covers a Gene MacLellan song that Ann Murray made famous. And no, it’s not “Snow Bird.”
This song represents an important shoft in our society, away from comsumerism and materialistic aspirations. What's pivotal is that these changes in behaviour really come down to what we obligate each other to do. I remember growing up in Winnipeg, it was fine to ride a bike to school or work, but no one ever rode a bike to the bar. Then around 2000 we started seeing groups of 4 and 5 bicycles chained up outside of downtown clubs. You could attribute it to hard economic times "forcing" people to ride bikes, but really, no one did it until it became cool (or at least socially accepted by peers). So the long and the short of it is we can save a lot of time, money, and energy by simply making a shift in social customs. Tell your friend it's okay that he doesn't live in a house on the hill. You're still going to come visit him, as long as he offers you a beer within reach.
