Flora (Edmonton, Alberta) is multi-instrumentalist Rob Ross. Ross started in 2001 with noise and soundscape projects rendered from circuit-bend toys and disassembling cheap synthesizers. As Ross continued with these projects delicate melodies slowly weaved their way into his sound and soon were at the forefront of his work.
In 2005 Flora was born. Flora music is lush electronics based heavily in weaving melody and hushed vocals. On "We All Lose" (2006), Flora's first release, Ross steers away from a polished sample-based, production and creates a work created from instruments played by his own hands. The five song EP was produced in his own studio, located in a mobile home on an acreage outside of the small town of Three Hills, Alberta. On the EP Ross uses his voice, guitar, analog synthesizers, as well as various electronic devices and toys to create evolving melodies. In 2006 Flora began live performances, starting with a show in Portland Oregon where Ross was a part of Vision and Hearing, a night of live music and live visual projections.
In 2007 Ross moved with his wife to Edmonton, Alberta where they currently reside. During this time Ross has continued to develop a dynamic live presentation of Flora music and has played in various venues in Alberta and Ontario. A full length Flora album is currently in the works for a 2008 release.
