Bitter/
sweet, two and a half minute ripping anthems, quite reasonably sums
up Authors. While the name may appear new, the band is not, known
until recently as The Smile, a project of Toronto
multi-instrumentalist/ Akroid drummer, Jason Galbraith. Jason has
most successfully smashed the the first wave of early 90's FAT style
punk together with angular and mathy mid 90s post-hardcore. A feat
that has been relentlessly attempted by many but generally sounds
patchy at best. Authors seamlessly seals the deal in both live and
recorded format ushering in possibly a whole new era and style by
putting forth one new sound rather than two parts of something old.
If
you could play all the required instruments, had the time as well as
the means to make your very own ultimate album, you would be crazy
not to. A bunch of gear, the comfort of Canada's Employment Insurance
and a label to press and distribute his gems, Galbraith was laughing.
Conceived somewhat haphazardly as “The Smile”, Jason went on to
play a handful of shows with a shaky line-up, yet still managed a
fair bit of attention, locally and abroad. The spread appeared to be
the sole product of word-of-mouth via live performance and the web.
The project's blending of song structure, musical melody and hooks
paired with odd meters and edgy riffs was making waves.
Over
the past year the band has filled out with full time members
consisting of brother Ken Galbraith on bass, Aaron Morrice on drums
and Scott Sokoloski on second guitar. Now writing as a group, and
playing live with much more frequency the once “project” has
officially made the ranks of band. The evolving sound and
interpersonal dynamics was eagerly hinting towards a new name. On top
of it all, Jason says “people outside of our immediate scene seemed
to be reserved in paying us a listening because of an assumption of
our sound based on The Smile as a name”. “Authors came about in a
random, natural sorta way that has a feel, I think much more
accurately portrays our band as a whole”.
Authors
is hard at work on a new batch of material, giging like crazy and
booking Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes for the months ahead.
