biographical info

There may be something in the water in Saskatchewan of late. Young Benjamins are the newest of the exceptional bands to come out of that Canadian Province. Fronted by UK born (grandson of Iranian farmers) Neusha  Fransaskoismulti - instrumentalist,  Veronique Poulin on violin, glockenspiel, keys and vocals. Bryn Krysa (bass) and Kuba Smigielsky (percussions) provide a rock solid and innovative rhythm section.

On LESS ARGUE, Young Benjamins combine folk and rock with a subtle but effective dose of pop and a focused use of minor chords, creating a sound that is infectious and refreshing. The album, comprised of 11 original tracks was recorded in Saskatoon at Avenue Recording Studios and mastered in Athens, GA by John Keane (Cowboy Junkies, REM, Indigo Girls).

Less Argue begins with "Colonial Pt. I" sung by Poulin. Her slightly haunting vocals set the tone for an album that stays interesting to the final chord. The rest of the album finds Mofazzali primarily on  lead vocals; a distinctive vocal with a slightly perceptible British accent. "Out There (In The Wild)" has a pop-anthemic quality to it. "Young Argument" builds around a simple vocal and guitar part, ultimately being fleshed out with percussion, bass and keys. The 55 second track, "Green Eyes" is a love song based on a poem written by Mofazzali's grandfather originally in Farsi. "Oh Marie" is a stand out track full of violin flourishes and the aforementioned pop-sensibility. "Colonial Pt. II" uses "OHs" and handclaps effectively leaving the listener wanting more.

"Most of the songs on Less Argue are edgy and angular. Defined by the interplay between Mofazzali’s guitar and Poulin’s violin, they move across the spectrum of contemporary music, from straightforward rock and roll to the edges of indie experimentalism." - Alex MacPherson, Verb Magazine

Hi Canada

posted by Young Benjamins

Winter in Saskatchewan has been somewhat unsatisfying this year, with bleak temperatures covering up the lack of snow, there is nothing to do but drive or walk in the mud/snow pudding that swathes the narrow and heavily congested roads. I am only complaining because the mud always gets on my windshield and my washer fluid tank has a hole in it, therefore I can never see when I am driving. Today I had to bring a bottle of water and gently, without crashing, pour it onto my windshield, with my left hand hanging out of the driver’s window. It worked well, but most of it got on my face (that’s what…)

Can’t wait for spring now, because I have been teased like a relationship with one contributor, the entire winter.

Can’t wait to play shows this summer.
