biographical info
Wilfred N & the Grown Men is an Edmonton recording group that started in the early eighties with a slew of releases and great radio tunes out of their basement studio. Wilfred Kozub and Jamie Philp, the founding members of the band, keep getting better – and seven albums later, Wilfred N & the Grown Men presents its ambitious new album, "Stop Go Romeo".
Walking the line between infectious pop hooks, gentle
ballads and quirky twists, “Kozub stretches out and layers trippy effects into
the songs, welcoming a little unsteadiness into the mix.” (VUE Weekly). Peter
North in the Edmonton Journal writes: “Wilf Kozub has every reason to celebrate
the release of what many observers feel is his best work. That’s saying
something, given the collection of gems that adorned Kozub’s inspired 2003
album, Waiting for Luck To Come. The critically acclaimed disc also
struck a chord with the music supervisors of the CBS TV series, Joan of
Arcadia, who plucked one of the tunes for its soundtrack.” Kozub produces
enduring, relevant music that has an essential optimism. He and Jamie Philp are
joined on the album, and in live performance, by members of Shout Out Out Out
Out – Clint Frazier and Nik Kozub.
Quotes about Waiting For Luck To Come? . . .
“This lush and accessible pop music transcends trends yet doesn’t sound dated. It is timeless yet timely. Neat trick.”. . . “Except for maybe a Prairie Beach Boys’ kind of vibe, it is truly original.” Mike Ross, The Edmonton SUN
“Waiting for Luck to Come is smart, crafty pop containing moments both unexpected and lovely: some stray Hawaiian guitar, a gentle bossa nova groove, melodies that recall Sparklehorse as much as the Beatles . . . their music sounds the way all great music does, playful, inventive and alive.” Tom Murray, SEE Magazine
Wilfred N and the Grown Men records are always surprising and, again, new musical territory is explored on Stop Go Romeo with songs like Darkness and Light (which can now be heard at www.myspace.com/wilfrednandthegrownmen), (I Love My) Bento Box, and There's Nothing Wrong With Me. It's cool stuff indeed, and fans won't be disappointed with the new album.
Not enough Wilfred N & the Grown Men? Yet another new wngm cd comes your way in 2010. It's the Wilfred N & the Grown Men TAKE OUT MENU – a collection of Wilfred's faves from the band's releases over the years. Lots of rare and especially delectable tracks like "Thunder On the Tundra", "I Can't Get the Nerve", "Indian Summer", "Knockadoor Ginger", and "Sad New Day" (covered by Shout Out Out Out Out a couple years ago for CBC Radio 3)!
Confucius say . . . listen to Wilfred N & the Grown Men and be happy every day!
