An ice cream vendor in Italy once told me, “You cannot know Roma unless you’ve lived here a lifetime.” The same logic applies to the duo of Aaron Freeman and Mickey Melchiondo, a.k.a. Gene and Dean Ween. Unless you’ve heard everything Ween has ever recorded, it’s hard to discern where these two childhood friends are coming from and where they might be going. And even then it’s difficult. They just don’t stay in one place long enough.
Unlike most bands, which work hard developing a recognizable “sound,” Ween’s prolific output has been all over the map, skipping from genre to genre, each song capturing the essence of a different sound, time, or place. Slip on one of their recordings for a crowd of Ween newbies (are there any left?) and expect to be complimented on your ability to put together a good mixed CD.
