Formed in August 2005 by long-time collaborators Marc St. Louis and Matilda Perks under the name There Were Valleys, the duo began playing together as a backing band for Brooklyn based anti-folk artist Rachel Lipson.
In 2006 they self-released their CDR, ‘Night War’ and bought a 1986 Volvo station wagon to live and tour in. Their live performances within the Montreal, New York and Toronto circuits have seen them share the stage with Fleet Foxes, MGMT, Yeasayer, Vetiver, Castanets, Wooden Stars, Pas Chic Chic, Shapes and Sizes, Magic Weapon (members of Sunset Rubdown), Dishwasher, Sandro Perri, Suckers, Red Rocket, The Keys and Azeda Booth.
In 2007 the band won Nightlife Magazine’s Pop Nightlife Award for ‘Most Promising Local Act’. Ther debut album “Sometimes Water Kills People” was recorded and co-produced by Alec “Orson Presence” Dippie from the legendary British post punk group The Monochrome Set.
The band has since expanded to a quartet in order to perform their intricate arrangements live.
