Underneath The Fray
Underneath The Fray is the moniker used by Saskatchewan singer/songwriter Lois Mullin. “The ‘Underneath The Fray’ best describes myself, my methods, my writing, my experiences, it was an easy decision to go with that title”. Since 2004 UTF has recorded and released two full length Albums as well as a four song EP. Her first Album, 6000$$ Doors, was recorded and released with Torque Recording Company in 2004. “Well, it’s funny, the producer, Kevin Gales heard me play at several community functions and at that time I probably knew 5 chords on my guitar and I was singing campfire songs. He saw something in my presence on the stage (and I use the word ‘stage’ loosely!) and something in the way I interpreted those simple songs and he suggested I start writing some of my own, submit them to him and see what we could do. That is where things began for me on this journey through the world of creating music.”
The follow up album “Every Song on the Radio” was a self-produced, self-recorded album that UTF released in 2007. “The second album came after a time of significant personal difficulties, it was tough to believe I could do an album on my own and with my own limited resources, the ongoing plight of any recording musician. I recorded it in my tiny bachelor apartment that I share with my two kids. I still can’t believe I managed to record the vocals in between the banging hot water pipe sound and the barking dog in the apartment above me! I laugh now every time I hear those pipes!” She toured extensively in Western Canada playing more than 50 shows a year. “I traveled to so many small towns I had never heard of and played in the most interesting establishments! I slept in my car in all kinds of weather and in some very freaky places, but I love heading out on the highway on the way to a show, and I do it as often as I can”
The EP “Anywhere You Are” was released in 2008 and UTF was awarded “songwriter of the year” for the song “Dream Catcher” by thesasktop30.com.
UTF is presently working on writing and recording her third full length album. “I took about 10 months off from performing live to focus on writing some new material. I am super excited about my new songs. I hope to have an album ready in the fall of 2011.”
“The future is exciting, it’s unknown, full of potential, amazing challenges and beautiful people. I look forward to writing songs that I love, playing music with my friends, performing for lovers of music and enjoying the process of the journey.”
