biographical info
Ugliness Man started making electronic music under the name Toast around 1996-97. His early experiments were very basic, primitive, and not too original. However, he kept churning out tunes, getting slightly more experimental as he went along, but they still mostly came off as attempts to sound like Portishead or Simon Harris. He took a break to pursue other ventures, mostly involving acoustic folk music and a few small online projects. In late 2001, his interest in electronic music was resparked when he accidentally discovered that converting a sequenced song from one format to another in a program he was using sometimes totally mutated the song, adding a whole new spin to his compositions. This inspired him to plunge into minimalism, as well as blips and bleeps and things much more experimental than anything else he had touched before. While he still uses the name "Toast" at karaoke, he realized that this would not fit the music he was now producing. Taking a character name from a They Might Be Giants song, he became Ugliness Man. After spending 19 years stranded on Prince Edward Island, Ugliness Man recently escaped and has relocated to Calgary, Alberta.
