biographical info
Here come The Stables. One of Canada’s best-kept folk/country/bluegrass/punk secrets is no longer a secret. Highly energized live shows, three part harmonies & home made instruments are just a few things helping spread the word rapidly. Three highschool buddies - Poor Pelly, Blind Billy Blasko & Darren ‘Choo Choo’ Clarke are all the front man of the Stables. Switching instruments and lead vocal duty with a cry of “Snowball!” this Oshawa, Ontario trio keeps audiences on their toes and guessing (not to mention dancing!). Instruments can at anytime include acoustic guitar, tenor banjo, mandolin, tenor guitar, a suitcase, harmonica, and a washtub bass that includes a hockey stick.
2008 had the Stables recording their debut CD & touring Canada non-stop; building fans everywhere they went. Their hard work found them opening for Cuff The Duke’s east coast tour as well as an opening spot for Elliott BROOD’s New Years Eve Bash at Lee’s Palace in Toronto. Their love of playing often finds them busking on the streets of Vancouver, Calgary, Halifax & St. John’s while traveling from city to city.
Themes of love, death, addiction, personal & social tragedies & hope are met with a variety of moods from serious to comical on the Stables debut CD. Three members all being songwriters help the songs stay fresh & flowing. A do-it-yourself band they recorded, produced & mastered the album themselves in Billy Blasko’s Cobra HQ recording studio.
“Sometimes we are happy… sometimes sad… sometimes we are pissed off… our songs reflect who we are at the moment we write them. But when we get on stage to perform them for people it’s always a celebration.” – Poor Pelly
June & July 2009 will again find the Stables touring from east to west coast of Canada. They leave a little of themselves on every stage they grace. Look out. Here come The Stables!
