Show #18 - CD Release - Calgary AB
Our
debut CD release party. Wow. What a day, what a tremendous amount of
work, time and money it takes to release an album. This simple 6 song
EP took us a hell of a long time to make happen.
We
played at the Tropicana because we could get a guarantee and all our
friends could come out for free. We had a rad draw, shared the stage
with our good buds the Lions, got payed way too much, saw all our good
friends and got drunk for free and stayed up till the wee hours of the
morning.
It
was so much work organizing I forgot to sit back and enjoy the whole
thing. After it was all over I took a deep breath and realized how
well everything went and how glad I was it was all over.
The
manager Mark is a serious dick! The Tropicana is a good little pub and
it’s nice that we have the option of avoiding the downtown venues
sometimes but this guy almost makes playing here unbearable. He’s one
of the biggest tools I have ever met! But I hear he won’t be there for
much longer. Plus we got payed in the end so whatever, it was worth it
to put up with his shit.
Show #19 - The Slice - Lethbridge AB
Lethbridge
is soooo good to us. We love this little city. It is pretty close to
home for me so we I call it my home town show. The Slice was awesome,
we had a great draw and the sound was really good. There are so many
pretty girls in Lethbridge and they are all really into our band which
is a sweet bonus.
We
played semi-shitty but everyone loved us regardless. We were doing a
little weekend warrior thing so the Lions joined us for the show.
After
the show we sold a good number of CD’s which was sweet. We then tried
the infamous pizza which the venue is named after. It was fucking
awesome, i would name a venue after this pizza. We got a solid buzz on
and then headed over to my friend Steve’s for a game of beer pong.
We
started out playing doubles, band vs band. We played countless games
and I can’t remember the overall tourney winner but I do remember that
it was a blast. Paul (Lions Roadie) could not sink a single cup, it
was so funny, he just couldn’t seem to understand the game.
We played up super late and we had a rad night! It was fun to be back in Lethbridge.
Show #20 - The Ottoman - Medicine Hat AB
This
is probably the strangest venue I’ve played at. It is an ex-strip club
turned into a music venue. It is lit with dim red lights and full of
black leather ottoman sofas. It feels like you are in a classy lounge
in the depths of hell. The bar prides itself in amazing cocktails.
Having no knowledge of cocktails I copy what others are drinking. I
have a Buddha-something-rather which comes in a large glass with lemon,
kiwi, lime and lemongrass. It is the healthiest cocktail I have ever
consumed.
The
venue is half full of middle aged army men. This is not Nix Dickson
crowd. We play best to pretty girls, party animals, indie rockers and
lost boys. So we play a solid show but it’s a tough crowd. We sell a
few cd’s and pass out in our cars. We are too cheap to spend money on
hotel rooms at this point.
The
next day we grab our gear and we share a six pack with the owner Sean.
He is hands down the nicest music venue person we have met to date. We
talk classic Canadian punk rock and we call it a day.
Show #21 - Marquee Room - Calgary AB
Tammy
joined the band a few weeks prior to this and this was her first show
with us. So this one was a bit of a landmark in it’s own way. We
shared the stage with our buds Oh Lenore.
We
played semi-shitty and the turn out wasn’t great but we had a good time
anyways. Afterwards the whole band went back to our place and slugged
back a few drinks. It was definitely one of our weakest shows but we
were happy to have Tammy on board.
Show #22 - Orlando’s Pub 1 - Edmonton AB
We
drove up to Edmonton and hit up West Ed mall before the show. We took
Rob to Hooters cause he is obsessed with Hooters restaurants. I then
watched a guy give a demo for Sham-Wow, and it was impressive,
seriously. We wanted to go to the rides but Calin wanted to shop since
he’s metrosexual so we had to go into clothing stores...lame.
We
were desperate for a gig in Edmonton so we took our first offer.
Orlando’s Pub 1. Probably the shittiest venue I have ever played. I
felt stupid when we walked in for making my band play at such a shit
hole.
We
all played fooseball and had to wait till the Oilers game was over
before we could play. The bands were good Blue Sky Rain and Scantily
Clad and the Well Dressed Gentleman and the sound was surprisingly
good. We played really well and sold a bunch of CD’s. Both bands were
great and super nice to play with!
We
hung out with a bunch of people outside in the parking lot and it felt
like the cool part about high school. We then went to 7/11 and bought
a ton of munchies. After that we went and crashed at Rob’s cousins
house. All and all pretty good show despite the rough start.
Show #23 - Verns - Calgary AB
In
case you have never been there then you should know that Verns is a
shit hole. Probably the shittiest venue in Calgary but it has a unique
charm at the same time. We got there early and started chucking back a
bunch of pilsners. We got pretty trashed before we played. Calin
parked in the alley which you are not supposed to do and we did shots
and smoked in his car.
When
it was our turn to play I was so messed up I couldn’t even set up my
amp. Mark from Needy Cat had to come plug in my pedal and amp and tune
my guitar. I played so fuckin awful but had sooo much fun anyways. I
forgot to tune the entire show and told this crazy long story in the
middle about trying to steal gas from a hudderite colony when I was in
high school.
After
the show my friend Darren (Lions) came up to me and told me it was the
worst he had ever seen me play and that he wasn’t sure if i hit a
single right note. Tammy, Rob and I agreed that regardless we had one
of our funnest shows to date. We slugged back some more pilsners, got
paid and then dined and dashed on our bar bill. Afterwards we had hung
at our place and some good laughs. Good night!
Show #24 - Dicken’s Pub - Calgary AB
This
was our first time playing Dicken’s. And my first time even being
inside Dicken’s. It’s a cool place, big stage and good sound. The
booking agent Isaac was the drummer for legendary Canuck punks
“Downway” so we get along just fine since he knows I was a huge
Downway, SNFU, Darryl’s Grocery Bag and Belvedere fan.
Our
turnout was mediocre but all our good friends were there so we had a
good time regardless. We played with Panda Attack, Sultan Pepper and
Edmonton’s Taking Medication.
Curtis
got trashed and was pretty entertaining. We made him come up on stage
and have a chugging contest with a random dude on stage. It was neck
and neck but the dude beat Curtis. It was pretty exciting to watch and
I enjoyed it to break the set up a little bit.
Show #25 - Private Function - Calgary AB
Wow,
I can’t believe I am going to tell you about this show. This will
seriously ruin all our rock and roll credibility but like I said
earlier, these show posts are all about being honest.
So
we totally got offered to play a mormon birthday party, upstairs at a
big mormon church. I had 2 english classes with the guy and we had to
do a group project together. He was super nice and became a bro of
mine. He was offering good cash, free food, birthday cake and the show
started at 7 on a Friday night so we just got to show up, eat, play and
split.
The
buffet was amazing, seriously so much good food and munchies. They had
those litte cream puff things, I fucking love those things. We each
ate like 3 plates then Calin, Tammy and I slugged back a few Lucky
Lager and did some shots of Southern Comfort in the car. I had a hard
buzz on during the show.
We
were not allowed to swear and I was talking my face off, I was so
nervous about swearing by accident and not getting paid. The sound was
good and we had a really fun time. The mormon kids were super nice and
they all danced. We packed up at nine thirty, had some more food, got
paid and were shit faced and partying elsewhere by eleven. I would do
a show like this again in a heart beat.
Show #26 - Marquee Room - Calgary AB
We
shared the bill with our friend Paige Woodbury and Nushi. It was
Paige’s first show ever so she was super stoked and I’m glad I got to
be a part of that. Nushi is Rob’s favorite local band so he was real
excited to play with them. So it was a cool night for those 2 reasons.
Paige
was wicked and Nushi was super tight. We played last and we had a good
draw. Unfortunately I couldn’t get my guitar tone or levels right so I
was a bit off but we held it together. After the show this dude came
up to me and said he played in a band called “Jenny”. We realized we
played against each other in the songwriting contest last summer which
was cool. He was playing next door at Verns so went over and hung out
with him.
We
had a real good time hanging out and Sean’s band “Jenny” is now one of
favorite local discoveries. They jam at Vern’s every thursday and it
was cool hanging out there with a bunch of other local musicians.
Show #27 - Henotic - Lethbridge AB
Best show of all time! Unanimous Nix Dix decision.
We
headed down with Needy Cat and Matt Gig and the Intellectuals. I
thought we were playing downstairs but they double booked and had to
throw us upstairs. They booked a gay gala downstairs so I felt a bit
choked since my conservative parents were coming and I had to explain
we got bumped for a gay party.
They
gave us free dinner and drinks and I sat with Mark and Chelsea from
Needy Cat and had an amazing free range bison steak cooked rare. It
came with an incredible wild salad and home made bread. It was
seriously one of the best meals I have ever had, I would really
recommend it. I had two pilsner to wash it down and after some great
food, drink and conservation I warmed up to the idea of playing
upstairs.
Darren,
Tyler, Chris and Paige came down and they were in hardcore party mode.
It was hard to be in a bad mood when they were around.
Mark
and Chelsea kicked it off and they were fucking awesome. They were a
little more rock and roll than normal but they did such a good job
pulling it off. By the time they were done a boat load of people
showed up. We sold out the upstairs which was a first for the Nix
Dicksons.
We
played last and the crowd was phenomenal. The sound was perfect and we
played pitch perfect. I spent an hour writing the best set list ever
including jokes and gimmicks. It worked out so well and we seemed
to play for the perfect amount of time. Everybody knew all the words
to our songs which made the gang vocal parts and sing a long parts
awesome.
Seriously, what’s with all the pretty girls in Lethbridge. Man, our Lethbridge fans are awesome. Definitely my fav city to play!
When
we played All Girls Want we talked my mom into coming up and singing
along and Rob handed his mic out to the crowd. I don’t think I sang a
word to that whole song, it was the best sing a long ever. Wow.
We
made so much money and people bought us a shit load of shots after the
show. We hung out for a bit and then some girls told us to come to
their house for a party and not to worry about picking up alcohol. We
stayed up partying till about 5 am and had such a rad time at the
party. It was the best show ever!
Show #28 - New City Likwid Lounge - Edmonton AB
We
got asked by Taking Medication to come up and play Edmonton on a
Thursday night. There was a crazy snow storm so it was a bit of a
hassle to drive up but we made it happen.
We
played in the middle of Taking Medication and the Shakedowns. I was a
little choked how shitty draws both these bands had considering they
were both local. I fuckin hate when we play with bands that don’t have
draws.
The
sound sucked sooo much dick despite the fact that we played well. The
night seemed shitty but we had a nice little draw for us which we were
happy about. Our bud Henry from Blue Sky Rain came up and sang with us
and helped salvage our night! He is such a rad dude and it’s people
like him that make playing in new cities tolerable.
They
gave us staff discount on booze so we kept ordering Pilsners with shots
of Jameson whiskey. I realized I love Jameson whiskey and that this
was my favorite drink combo ever. My friend Arden came out and drank
with us even though he had to work early the next day. It was great to
see him, it has been like 2 years. I played in my first real band with
Arden back in the day and he taught me a lot about music.
Though
the sound sucked the venue pulled through by giving us free tix to the
Monotonix show downstairs. Those guys are fucking crazy! They are a
real shitty band but their live show is a real specatcle.
So
it turned out to be a pretty fun night after all! We really need to
find a rad band in Edmonton that wants to do show swaps with us. Any
respectable Edmonton band want to swap good show for good show then
please drop me a line!
