biographical info
Out of the ashes of his former band, Kobayashi, Franco Proietti forged a new group, still intent on exploring the nebulous terrain between jazz and hip hop. What began as a one man show featuring Proietti on live sax playing over loops, beats, and soundscapes on his laptop has evolved into a band with a full time rhythm section and a rotating cast of musicians lending their sound to the effort. The name of the group, The Franco Proietti Morph-tet, is an indicator not only of the of the elasticity of the line up, but also of the band’s sound. During their successful inaugural year, the Morph-tet have managed to put out a debut CD, Morphology, play to larger and larger crowds and open for two groundbreaking groups also known for musical experimentation; The Sun Ra Arkestra and The Digable Planets.
The Morph-tet’s approach to music is that of inclusion and playful experimentation. There are combinations of many musicians, and many styles of music all on the same stage. Their varied influences run from bebop to hip hop, from nu-jazz to reggae, but their sound is something separate from the mere mash up of said muses.
