After announcing the contest, The DoneFors had over 100 suggestions for names for our new GM Safari touring van. Thanks to everyone who submitted an entry. We're excited to announce that the new official van name is Tony Vanza! Thanks to Melanie Tapson of Halifax, Nova Scotia for submitting such a perfect name. AN EAST COAST PERSUASION

Acclaimed Canadian bands The DoneFors and The Jessica Stuart Few are courting each other from Toronto to Halifax. Rumour has it that these bands have a crush on one another and will be going on a bunch of “dates” together this October. Book these charming bands for a “date” at your venue and watch the sparks fly!

With both bands fresh off debut performances on main stages at The Toronto Downtown Jazz Festival and the Canadian festival touring circuit, it became apparent that both bands had something savoury and enticing in common. It’s the stuff that good marriages, and good live shows, are made of. Now, in a rare double bill tour, the bands will chase each other’s tails eastward and home again in a serious attempt to woo one another; and eastern Canadian audiences.

It was a very swank event, complete with red carpet, celebrities, a super eclectic musical performance lineup (In My Coma, Magenta Lane, Amanda Martinez, and the Antiheroes), great food, drink, dresses, heels, and incredible silent auction Thanks to Jocelyn, Kim, Katy and all of the lovely volunteers who worked so tirelessly to pull it off (and made us feel very important).

Disc Review: The DoneFors Award Winning Album (independent)

Considering its cheeky title and the DoneFors’ previous LP, How To Have Sex With Canadians, I thought this album would be funnier. While sex and sass are on offer (Janine Stoll sings flirtatious jazz-pop on opener Cherry Season), “weird and geeky” are better descriptors for a band so all over the map.

They switch vocalists, change time signatures and throw in prog and disco. Stoll’s high, smooth voice imitates a wolf at one point, scats the next, sweetly sing-talks on Tallboy and pulls off Joni Mitchell-like folk on 808.

The material in the middle – notably the mellower Berlin, sung by guitarist Paul MacDougall, and the upbeat world-folk-pop of Mercator Map – is strongest. Too bad the polished production often takes over, especially on overly reverby Carry.

Hey Mom(s),

Last stop; paradise. Early this morning we landed on Haida Gwaii. What a mysterious and magical place this is. But first let’s bring y’all up to speed.

Took the ferry over to Nanaimo on Vancouver Island on Tuesday afternoon. Janine had an in-studio radio interview at Radio Malaspina and then we hunkered down to our accommodations before sound check at The Cambie. The show was sparsely attended, but we we moved people (and merchandise!) and performed well.  Thanks to Paul who made us sound great.  Thanks to the bar staff who kept us well-watered.  Thanks go to Josh Gellman who worked so hard to get us out, rocked the promo, and who performed a really great Spanish tune during the show, took us to a breathtaking river, and gave us a lift to the ferry docks.

A tip: if you’re ever in Nanaimo; check out Demeter’s Coffee Vault!  This place seems completely unlikely for the area, but the coffee is incredible, and the chef is a serious talent.  Great breakfast; especially the freshly-made croissants.

After returning to Vancouver we spent the afternoon roaming Commercial Dr., eating Fresh Slice pizza, and drinking Turks coffee before heading over to Cafe Deux Soleils for setup and sound check. We performed with a great band from Edmonton called The Consonance who opened the show and brought their share of audience members. We hit the stage to a full room and the band sounded great. Our friends Luke Doucet and Melissa McClelland were in attendance and we asked them up to perform one of Melissa’s songs that we know, which sent the crowd over the top. All in all, good show in Vancouver. Three song encore.

A tip: Melissa and Luke have formed a duo projects called White Horse and it promises to be one of the best Canadian musical things ever!  What we’ve heard so far is beautiful. Check them out!

Last night we didn’t sleep much. Spent the night at friends, but got to bed way too late and had to wake up way too early to catch our flight to Haida Gwaii. 7:45am flight that got us here roughly around 10am. A really friendly guy named Mike was sent by the festival to pick us and Jaffa Road up at the airport in Masset and gave us a tour of the town and then drive us down to the even smaller town of Tlell where we’ll be staying for the festival. Mike showed us the beautiful totem poles in Masset and told us horrifying details of some of the history of the Haida nation. At the height of their population, there was 20,000 Haida living on the west coast of the Americas, and after the white mans genocide against them there were only 500 left. Since around 1969 the population has grown again to around 5,000 and after having all the totems on the island burnt and destroyed, they erected the first new totem on the lawn of the Anglican church. During our tour we met Captain Ron, a fisherman who insisted we come down to the dock and onto his boat, and then proceeded to give us about 40 lbs worth of fish that he caught today. Half a sockeye salmon, a full chinook and a full 15 pound spring. Life here revolves around fish. Bald eagles and ravens that are as fat, healthy and plentiful as seagulls nesting the waters of Stelco in Hamilton. We passed about 20 deer on the highway on route to Tlell. What a place this is. We feel exceptionally blessed.

So now we’ve checked into our accommodations at the beautiful Riverside Bed and Breakfast on a river here in Tlell. After warm showers and a good long afternoon nap, we’re off to a barbecue with other artists and volunteers for this Edge of the World Festival. One of the volunteers at the festival is going to help cook this fish feast because none of us musicians know what the hell we’re doing. It’s gonna be delicious. We’ll keep you posted as we go.

July is just beginning and as I look back at 2011 I wonder how it has moved along so quickly. At a warped speed. The days grow short when you’re climbing metaphorical mountains.

I’ve been diligent today in my goal to get this new DoneFors’ website up and running. Get things done on time so that time is not gone and opportunities, lost. We’re always so busy. In life and in the goals that we set out for ourselves. Sometimes I wonder what we’re after. What’s the end game? Where’s this all heading? I’m always left with the same feeling. It all doesn’t really matter as long as you remember to take time to enjoy it. Mantra.

This year so far, we’ve produced, recorded, mixed, mastered and manufactured a new album; top to bottom. Award Winning Album was a dream we had two years ago after we’d finished our first album; How to have sex with Canadians. With some luck and skill we were awarded the grace of some funding from FACTOR and The Ontario Arts Council to make our ‘dream’ possible. It never could’ve been possible without these folks helping. Or, it would have played out a lot differently. We got to work with some incredible folks. Jeremy Darby and Andrew Heppner at Canterbury toiled away to capture our sounds, taking care to edit and choose the best parts. Bryan Lowe (Bryan Lowe!) was our secret weapon. With his patience and prowess, we put in countless hours at Joao Carvalho’s Mastering B Room. Not to mention our own Brian Lahaie offering up his mad skills in the editing chair… Like family, Bryan and JCM are now like a second home. Joao’s incredible generosity with his space and time and mastering skill was without borders. The ‘cherry’ on top was to have Michael Phillip Wojewoda mixed the album, which was a bit of a dream come true for many of us who have long been in sonic-worship of his audio resume. I can’t say enough about my band, too. Paul, Liam, Brian and our session players Rob Sills, Pat Blanchard and Phil Skladowski were pleasures to work with. So how did it all turn out? I can say without hesitation that this album is the best thing that we’ve ever been a part of. I am so proud of our little “Award Winning Album”. It’s perfect. And I’m not like one of those parents who thinks my obviously ugly baby is the cutest thing you’ll ever see. I’m pretty hard on myself when it comes to these things, and I can say without hesitation that this album is very special.

So, what better way to celebrate the making of a new album than to jump on a plane and hit up Germany and The Netherlands for 2 weeks? That’s what we did in May! Playing our first shows abroad was the ultimate lesson in the Yin and Yang of touring. 9 dates in 10 days. One miss-flown bass guitar, lots of wrong turns, slow nights, rude fans, fevers and parking tickets were always balanced by grateful fans, fantastic meals, the generosity of strangers and old friends, and beautiful new (old) surroundings. On tour with us was our dear friend Chad Nunn who captured 20 hours of video footage – to be released soon. We fell hard for Europe, and we think that many of those Europeans started to fall hard for The DoneFors. We can’t wait to return again.

Now I’m back in my basement apartment in Parkdale, fashioning traps for fruit flies, figuring out how to save cats and dogs, cooking meals, snuggling my cats, watching mini series after mini series, having regrets about it, monitoring baby raccoons scavenging outside my window, designing things for fellow musicians, hemming and hawing, and recovering from a summer cold. Trying to not lose sight of the victories. Trying to not feel overwhelmed by the pace of things. Breathe, Neener. Everything will be ok.

Hello hello!

I wish that we could say that we were unbusy, but that's just not the case. You see, building an empire takes time and effort. Love and stamps. Coffee and credit cards. We're right on the cusp of recording our new album and have been making sure that it's going to be nothing less than one of the best Canada has seen in a while. We really mean that.

But until that happens, life still rolls along at a fierce pace, blurred by grant writing, rehearsals, day jobs and no time for nonsense.

MORLOVE:

British Columbia-based duo Morlove create intricate, acoustic folk songs, but on All of My Lakes Lay Frozen Over, their sound is touched by engaging, unexpected pop nuances as well. Vocalists and multi-instrumentalists Emily Brown and Corwin Fox complement each other well, brushing gently against each other as writers and tastefully restrained singers. Along with near-lullabies like the title track, there are neatly arranged tunes like "Falcon" and "Relative Chemistries," which are propelled by interesting rhythms, strings and floating horns. The lyricism is evocative yet mysterious, presented in high-range voices that are practically angelic. There are jazz and post-rock leanings within things like "Old Perfume," and "When You Come Down" has the frontier shuffle of Calexico coursing through it. All told, there's a unique depth to Morlove's debut record, which sidles up to the edge of the unknown abyss, with its palm safely grasping the handrail. - Exclaim! Magazine

The Throwdowns and The DoneFors LIVE in Toronto!

The Throwdowns - Hawaii's most incredible band - are heading to Toronto for ONE SHOW ONLY on Monday, December 14th at The Gladstone Ballroom. The Cameron House from January to March

The DoneFors will be starting their third residency at The Cameron House in January. This one is for three months, folks! We're excited! Swing by the front room every Tuesday in January, February and March between 6pm and 8pm for some great music, and good fun. Kids are welcome!

The Ladybird Sideshow LIVE in Hamilton Catch the legendary Ladybird Sideshow at De La Sol Yoga Studio in Hamilton for a special "House Concert" on Saturday, December 19th. The Ladybird Sideshow are an acoustic collaboration between singer-songwriters Janine Stoll, Melissa McClelland, Lisa Winn and Erin Smith - very special! On the 19th the 'birds will be opening for Luke Doucet and Melissa McClelland. Proceeds from this event will benefit The Ladybird Animal Sanctuary - a facility that the 'birds will be building over the coming years for at risk animals. Back in the Studio

The DoneFors have been writing and writing, so to make it all real we've started recording at home with Brian at the helm. Keep your ears perked and you might get to hear something new and tasty soon. Or come out to one of our Cameron House residency nights Tuesdays from the beginning of January until the end of March where we will be work shopping new material.

Each month in this section we ask The DoneFors a new and revealing question... This month we've asked The DoneFors: What do you NOT want for Christmas?

What Paul doesn't want for Christmas:

No more music trinkets for me. No more government bailouts for the banks.

What Janine doesn't want for Christmas:

A bad sweater. Purple jeans. The Bubonic plague.

What Liam doesn't want for Christmas:

"My first thought is winter. . . but then I think that I'd also not want a hand gun for Christmas. It just seems too dangerous to have around."

What Brian doesn't want for Christmas:

"I definitely don't want anyone to spend their hard earned cash so that I can have something shiny and new...except some nice warm rubber boots.. that's the only exception because nobody wants cold wet feet for Christmas!..that's for sure.... so, I don't want cold feet, frost bite of any kind, or the flu for Christmas."

#1. Joni Mitchell - Apart from being one of the most brilliant song-writers going, Joni's unflinching eye for quality and detail is completely enviable. I also love the fact that she started making records well in to her late twenties. It makes me feel far younger than I sometimes do.

#2. Patty Griffin - The simplicity of Patty's words and melodies is what makes them so delicious. She tells a beautiful story without wasting words. A career that she leads with grace and talent shows a sincere maturing. She's always been best in my books.

#3. Emma-Lee - Local indie bell and dear pal. Emma-Lee gets results because she works hard and has the vision, drive, and talent that everyone wishes they had to make it in this tough industry. I'm forever tearing pages from her book. Not hard on the eyes, either.

• LONDON ON, June 4th @ The London Music Club – The DoneFors play with local Londoner Fraser, who is wicked and awesome. If you’re within a two-day drive of London, you’ll want to make it out to this show. It’s a fantastic multi-room venue in a huge old mansion house – quite gorgeous. Be there!
• WINDSOR ON, June 5th @ Phog Lounge – The DoneFors are big huge fans of Windsor, The Phog Lounge and especially James O-L and the Villains. We shared the stage with James and the guys back in February at Phog, and James pulled a ‘Phil Collins’ sitting in for his own drummer while belting out his very sweet contemporary rock/roots vocals. A match made in chocolate pudding we think.
• COLLINGWOOD ON – June 12th @ JD’s Bar & Grill - We’ve never played here before, but we’re really looking forward to sharing the stage with hip-hop/folkster Mark Harris who will open. Be there!
• BURLINGTON ON – June 19th @ C&B Records – The DoneFors play the unofficial stage at the Sound of Music Festival. A three day charity concert with all proceeds to benefit The Carpenter Hospice. We hit the stage at 8:30pm.
• TORONTO ON, Jun 25th @ The Supermarket – We’ve been looking forward to this one. Like returning to the scene of a beautiful crime, our multiple O on Toronto, this time the beautiful and talented singer-songwriter Sarah Noni Metzner will open. Sarah’s been touring through Germany and Italy since January, so we’re crossing our fingers that she brings some sausages and pasta to the show. You won’t want to miss this one. It’s gonna be off the hook.

• Brian’s been on tour for May with his rock band SuperstacK. They’ve been showing the east coast of Canada who’s boss with their huge trio sound. Brian is also excited about launching his new website soon, which is currently being designed by fellow DoneFor Janine.
• Liam just finished another year at Humber College. Next year he’ll be taking astronomy, wood shop, and economics. Liam’s other band – Mr. Something Something – will be releasing their 4th full-length album Shine Your Face on June 3rd with two shows at The Supermarket in Toronto (8pm and 10pm).
• Paul spent much of May nursing a chopped-off fingertip and a black eye. Paul does not like pigeons…maybe even hates them, and because of this he’s been building up universal karma by saving worms roasting on sidewalks and tossing them back into the grass.
• Janine won a contest for her song “Means to My End”. She’s been rewarded entrance to a 3-day songwriting workshop with David Francey and Craig Werth in Wells BC, a performance slot at Artswells Festival, a CBC radio spot, an article in BC Musician Magazine, and recording time with one of her musical heroes Corwin Fox! We’re all really proud of Janine, who coincidentally shares the prize with fellow singer-songwriter and our family member James Lamb. Janine also builds websites…check these babies out: Melissa McClelland (Six Shooter Records artist), Mavreen David Photography, Aurelia Engstrom (jazz/cabart vocalist), and The Good Lovelies (folk/roots trio - coming early June)! Dearest,When last we spoke you were far away and I was here waiting for you. I stayed up nights watching bad TV, and those sexy commercials with the ladies and the telephones. I even bought a Magic Bullet Mini Blender and a ShamWow. I don't know why. I don't like blending food, and I certainly don't clean up after myself much anymore. Not since you left. The only thing I've really done of any significance was buy a new CD. This band called The DoneFors made a record called "How to have sex with Canadians". Funny, I know. I thought it would help me boost my mojo. Maybe it'd be a crash course in how to make a sexy digital movie Canadian styles that I could post on youtube. Maybe you'd stumble on it some day and you'd fall in love with me again. Then you'd come home and make everything better. Well, to be honest, I was only slightly disappointed that this new CD didn't really teach me much about anything sexy, but what it did do for me is immeasurable. I started brushing my teeth again, recently. Finally took the recycling out. Made plans to see my parents. I even picked up my guitar again. All these efforts were subtle, but the only thing I can accredit the change to was listening to this CD. I think that you'd really like it. It might not make you love me again, but at least you'd be happy about something. Even these beautiful sad songs seem a bit hopeful. Anyway, The DoneFors are going to be doing a CD Release Party in Toronto, and I think it would be good for me to get out. Think I'll go. Alone even. Maybe you'll wanna come after reading this. As the first snows of winter began to drift in from the north, the children built a canoe of dried wood and dead leaves, eager to cross over the 49th and find themselves at home before the lakes and rivers froze over. While the snow swelled in a quiet cyclone around them, the predicament was clear – with the temperature dropping mercilessly quick, they would surely be stranded as a grizzly bear's snack if not a frozen block of flesh and bones. Unfazed, one of the children pulled a glass bottle from inside his wool coat, placed it on its side and spun it around.
