biographical info
What started as a recording project between
brothers soon transformed into a five-piece rock band. Nathan (guitar)
and Ryan (guitar/vox) had just started writing together and were making
these lo-fi analog indie rock demos. They gave them to friends and
everyone started asking for copies. Next some longtime musician friends
wanted to jam the tunes and a whole new dimension was born. Everything
sounded bigger and fuller than the simple beats and bass lines on the
demo tapes. The band moved in together and began playing shows in
Ontario, focusing on Toronto, which built them buzz as a new indie rock
band. The early demos recorded by the brothers caught the ear of
singer/songwriter Ben Lee, who introduced the boys to James Iha
(formerly of Smashing Pumpkins) who they showed new demos from the band
which then led to the recording of the first Anti-Q's EP. The EP was
recorded in five days at James' studio Stratosphere Sound in New York
City.
Along with the EP, the Anti-Q's produced their first music
video "Little Jesus," which was filmed in their cozy, instrument-
scattered house. They also started to perform with larger acts such as
the Trews, Tokyo Police Club and the Nu Pornographers, as well as being
invited to perform at festivals such as NXNE and Scene Music Fest The
EP provided national exposure for the boys on stations The Edge 102.1
and Much Music's the Wedge.
After a year of playing packed and
empty clubs throughout Ontario, the Anti-Q's hit the studio to record
their first full length album, titled Sinners and Saints. It was
released in December 2007. The Q's went right back to work, opening for
acts such as Ron Sexsmith and booking and promoting Ontario dates in
early 2008. The Anti-Q's are excited to spend the next year traveling
around spreading the word of rock n roll.
