biographical info

Trike was born as Zipperhead in 1997 in Montreal, when Stephen Taylor began recording quirky, catchy songs with a four-track recorder.  After a few line-up changes, Zipperhead became Trike in 2000.  Taylor went to art school in 2001, but after graduating in 2005, Trike was reborn with Taylor and Wes G. Knight (guitarist, singer).  After Trike's first Canadian tour in 2006, Taylor and Knight split up and Taylor stayed in Montreal.

Trike became a six-piece in Montreal, complete with fiddle, cello, glockenspiel, bass, keyboard and flute, but after eight months Taylor decided Trike worked best minimally.  Taylor and Xania Keane, the fiddle player/Irish dancer, moved to Vancouver where Trike took off like it never has before.  They aquired a manager.  They started playing loads of gigs, from sex shops to Elementary schools as well as busking.  Their antics entailed doing a "city bus tour" and jogging in public, as part of their act.

And in the Fall of 2007, Trike won "Bro Jake's $20,000 Gong Show" with their hit song, "The Trikey".  Trike is now planning a European Tour for the Spring of 2008.

This is my first time blogging on our radio 3 site.  I'm excited to start putting work into this site.  It just looked so ancient, what with the pic of me and Wes from 18 months ago, and these ancient songs... time for a refresher.

So much has been happening!  Where to start!

We got back to Vancouver in late-August; just over three months ago.  I had been in Montreal for 10 months, working like a dog at a telephone company, working on a bizarre feature film in the Eastern townships, doign occasional shows.  Then Xania and I discovered a kinship in each other, with our wacky antics and musical shenanigans, and she became part of The Trike Machine.

So I brought her back to Vancouver.  I had 100 bucks in my pocket, and in the last three months, after oodles of adventures, I now have 10,000 in my pocket (well, not quite, but in a week or so).  We won "the GONG show" and won $20,000 smackeroos, with our song "The Trikey".  That is the biggest, most life-shaping thing that has occured in the last three months.  Not to mention finding a kickass manager who thinks outside of the box, recording a five song EP, doing a whack of shows, packing Cafe Deux Soleils and Hoko's (fullest it's ever been!), getting Trike's first ever gig at The Railway Club after years of wanting to play there!

Lady Luck has shined upon us!  It's amazing... And now there are so many possible paths, so many opportunities, and being grassroots and being small potatoes means we have to do things on our own steam, and figure things out ourselves.  It's tricky sometimes.  It's hard to know what the best choices are to make.  Obviously we want to keep playing and make new fans.  We are both craving touring Europe (esp. Germany).  Booking Europe is a daunting task, however... so today we will sit down with our effable manager and discuss deets.

But it's an exciting place to be at.  There are so many questions re: labels etc.  Do we want a label?  Are they even important anymore?  How do we move to the next step?  What is the next step?  CDs are dead.  Digital distribution is where it's at, so we're looking into that.

At this particular moment in time, we're taking a step back.  We've just finished playing a whole whack of concerts and now we just want to purchase laptops and recording gear and start to record some new stuff.  We have a gig on January 3rd and we'll start promoting for that, but for now we need some time to just take in what's been happening, and start planning our tour....

PS: This image is from our show last night at a place called "The Royal Unicorn".  A ridiculously fun show, for a sleepy Thursday night... played with the Gay Straights, with their baby blue handkerchiefs and white outifts which showcased their buns perfectly!
