biographical info
The Nellis Complex are a four piece rock collective from Halifax, Nova Scotia who combine ethereal soundscapes with aggressive rock attitude to create an imaginative and compelling brand of alternative rock. These traits, combined with catchy songwriting and a tight live presence, make The Nellis Complex a band to watch.
After playing throughout high school with various friends and under different band names, the band recently cemented their lineup and started work on a debut EP. Guitarists and principal songwriters Darren LeFort and Richard Sutcliffe combine their different styles of writing skillfully on the six song EP.
“Darren tends to come up with the neat riffs and sounds where as I write more in the broad sense of the song and that meshes to create some really interesting tunes,” says vocalist Richard Sutcliffe.
The group, along with thunderous rhythm section Rob Kelly on drums and Ryan Sutcliffe on bass, recorded their EP in the spring of 2005 at Sound Market Recording with legendary Halifax producer Terry Pulliam (Sloan, Tyler Messick). “We went in and tracked live off the floor in two afternoons and then did the odd overdub later if it was needed. We wanted to keep the sound as close to our live sound as possible, so that the record was really honest,” says Rob Kelly of the recording experience. “Yeah, no point sending out demos of something we could never recreate live,” agrees Richard Sutcliffe.
