biographical info

Stewed Roots is the duo of Jeff (Jennifer) Hale and Neva Tesolin from Toronto and Niagara, seasoned performers in a wide variety of musical styles. Jeff with her country/folk influences and Neva with a classical/blues background, their recent collaboration has cultivated a versatile sound on the Canadian music scene. With the memorable vocals of Jeff on guitar, accompanied by Neva on piano and accordion, Stewed Roots is a natural vehicle for original folk/roots music. The duo earned the 2009 One Fret Less Award, sponsored by the Ottawa Folk Festival, and have garnered CBC, independent and international air play and reviews with their debut CD ‘In the Middle of This,’(2008) produced by the award winning Paul Mills. CBC Galaxie Radio Folk/Roots Channel’s top spins of 2009 included the songs "I Don't Think About Him Much," "Pretension Rag," and "The Fisher and Me," offering simple but affecting homespun tales -- memorable story songs that you readily want to rehear. "Your music is sort of like a car blanket, warm and cozy, one I would wrap myself in on a cold drive. Available at http://cdbaby.com/cd/stewedroots

Stewed Roots at the Ottawa Folk Festival

posted by Stewed Roots

The Ottawa Folk Festival was a fantastic festival for Stewed Roots. Being in the company of fine, gracious people from all walks of life was truly inspirational. Highlights were being on the Hill Stage with musicians with names associated with "field", that's Digging Roots, The Arrogant Worms, Tall Trees, Charlotte Cornfield, and hosted by Canada's own Ed Lawrence. Very green! We also had a blast with Bryan Bowers and Arthur Macgregor on the Moon Stage, cracking 'moon' jokes, and finally on the Hall Stage, we were elegantly invited to join past recipients of the One Fret Less Award, The Good Lovelies. How lovely and good of them! What a treat to hear all the gals harmonizing behind our songs. To top off a great weekend, our fabulous producer won the prestigious Helen Verger Award for his contribution to  folk/roots music in Canada! And... keeping the whole fest rolling were those wonderful volunteers who were so well organized, with fantastic foods and smiling faces. A wonderful experience Ottawa! Thank you so much!
