On September 1, 2010 STAREWELL turns ten years old. When STAREWELL began rehearsing in 2000, they were largely unknown and alone in their pursuit of “rock’ n’ roll decadence”. At that time Lilithfair, tub-thumping and one-hit wonders claimed that someone had “stole [their] sunshine”. Ironic considering the rock n’ roll forecast had gone from 30 degrees and sunny in the mid-90’s, to cloudy and blasé by the turn of the millennia.
Fast-forward ten years. Though a lot has changed for STAREWELL the fact remains that it is still “a long way to the top, if you wanna rock n’ roll”!
Since the tub-thumping of the early 2000’s, rock music has been invigorated by video games such as Rock Band and Guitar Hero, yet not all teenage kids want to show their love rock music by mastering four colored buttons on a plastic guitar. Contrary to popular belief, some kids still prefer to learn to play, or at least appreciate real instruments! Whether you are a button masher, or a true whammy bar lover, Starewell continues to inspire a variety of rock n’ rollers.
In my opinion, STAREWELL is one of the few bands putting the paddles to the chest of rock music. This pint-sized, hard-hitting outfit continues to churn out solid, in-your face, sling-a-beer rock’ n’ roll tunes that bring a little excitement into our every day drag. I mean let’s be honest, when “Broke and out of money” went to radio two summers ago, wasn’t it refreshing to hear a song with riffs, speed, and solos? Three-chord “la, la, la”, California girl-type tunes have their place, but how do ‘the guys’ get pumped for a weekend of belligerent ridiculousness listening to songs like “Never gonna be alone”, or “If today was your last day”?
STAREWELL’s new album Electric Resurrected is a fantastic remedy to this common problem. From the in your face spittle of “Dead to me” to the clear influence of the Stone Temple Pilots in “I am not lost”, to the speedy true story of a lame manager in “Pass the buck”- all aspects of rock’ n’ roll are here and accounted for. “New York Minute”, the third song on the album, will undoubtedly serve as the album’s first smash single. STAREWELL has even covered the classic Rolling Stones tune “Jumpin’ Jack Flash”, which in their hands has been given all the gusto, and explosiveness needed to impress a new generation of guitar-craving youngsters. If you love rock, this album has everything you love!
On September 1, 2010, another ten years will have come and gone for rock music. The past ten years for STAREWELL has proved to be a labor of love and allowed them to demonstrate that they are pillar of strength in the rock arena. While the temple of rock falls into disrepair, it is comforting to know there will always be a wall standing in STAREWELL’s corner.
