biographical info

The mysterious and eccentric Spaceport Union will whisk you away on a compelling cosmic voyage with their eclectic amalgamation of progressive art rock. Let yourself defy gravity as you are drawn into celestial planes diffused with experimental instrumentation and novel sound ideas, very much in the trail of past greats such as the Alan Parsons Project, King Crimson, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd.

Spaceport Union is a brilliant constellation of diverse talents including award-winning goth and art-rocker Caroline Spence, on guitars, keys, vocals and musical saw; multi-instrumentalist Adam Basterfield (who also moonlights in the Canadian Pink Floyd tribute,'Pigs'), on lead guitar, keys and vocals, 'in the pocket' drummer, Taylor Charles keeping it groovy and the prismatic and passionate, Richard McLeish holding down the bottom end on both electric and stand-up bass. Along with the sheer energy and dynamic force of their live performance, the band effortlessly transcends the mainstream and connects listeners to the realm of the timeless.

Spence’s evocative and powerfully resonant vocals meld seamlessly with the solid grooves laid down by Charles and McLeish. Put together with Basterfield’s virtuoso guitar and expansive vocal stylings, the result is a satisfying yet unique harmony of auditory sensations that are epic in scope and bring a new and exciting voice to the realm of art rock.

Contemplative, heartfelt, thought-provoking lyrics dance around the dynamic ebb and flow of the diverse instrumentation, twisting and weaving through the melodic trajectory, breaking through an atmospheric wall of sound that builds to an exhilarating explosion - then lets you drift back into a gentle orbit.

Spaceport Union has been aiming their trajectory toward the stars with multiple successes already under their belt. They first took their dynamic live show across BC and Alberta in the summer of 2010, completing a successful and well-received first tour. Soon after their return, they started getting invitations to play a number of festivals and showcases, including New Music West and VIMBC, as well as being chosen to be the host band for the Victoria BC Days festival 'Garage Band Live' event. Their passionate live performance garnered them a nomination for 'Best Live Act' at the 2011 VIMA Awards.

This past year, the band were invited to record their debut full length album with Michael Jack, producer and one of Canada's top audio engineers, who has worked with acts such as Rush, Bono, The Trews, and many more.  Taking him up on his invitation, the band managed to raise a substantial amount towards the album through hard work, playing lots of shows, and through the support of friends, fans, family, and venue owners. They also released the 4-song EP 'Lark', for sale in the summer of 2011.  The band successfully toured their way across Canada to Toronto and back this past August, spending time in the famous Phase One Studios recording an album they are very excited about. “The new album really captures the creative expansiveness and the unique sound of the band,” says band leader, Adam Basterfield, ”we gave ourselves permission to be vulnerable, supporting each other’s creative expression 100 per cent, and we’re very proud of the result.”  There are plans underway to promote and tour in support of the album in 2012.

Ride with Spaceport Union to stellar heights and be transported by the sheer energy of the timeless, aural tapestry of their creations. Be ready to be transported and transfixed by the transcendent vibes of... Spaceport Union.
