Here's more details about "ICELAND"!
In 2010 Iceland became a major source of frustration for travelers
around the globe as the volcano Eyjafjallajokull erupted unexpectedly,
spewing an unusually large amount of debris into the atmosphere,
darkening the sky with a dense ash and grounding aircraft for weeks.
With the volcano roaring in every news report on TV and online, Silver
Speakers decided to see the volcano for themselves and took a direct
flight to the tiny country from Toronto.
There, only a few kilometeres
away from the eruption, a creative spark was lit inside the band, ending
a prolonged songwriting drought.
The resulting record, "Iceland," is a result of that renewed creative
inspiration, and marks a unique entry into the Silver Speakers catalog:
characteristically dark lyrics that meditate on themes of identity,
belief and depression are buried within intentionally muddy and dense
production in an attempt to recall the grainy, sand-covered farms that
surrounded the volcano site. Protruding from a mess of grungy, distorted
guitars and electronic drum programming, songs include "In Harmony,"
which speaks from the point of view of a hired hand telling his band
leader that it's time to pack it in, "The Aloe Plant and the Apple Tree"
and "Works of Love" hat-tip Kierkegaard in the midst of existential
crisis, "Ink (By the Grace of God)" describes the private meaning of a
tattoo and "Up North" is a paean to country cottage retreats.
Writing of "Iceland" was completed within several coffee houses powered
by a steady stream of caffeine procured in Reykjavik, Iceland at Mokka
Kaffi, Prekid and Kaffitar, and in Toronto at the Dark Horse Espresso
Bar, Mercury Espresso Bar and the Jet Fuel Coffee Shop. All songs were
written by Tyrone Warner, who also performed all instruments and
recorded the album in his living room on an old 8-track Tascam recording
unit. The album was mastered down to audio cassette tape, and will only
be released as a digital download via bandcamp and an extremely limited
run of audio cassettes (which will include a complimentary download of
the record). The album cover photo is taken from the interior of
Reykjavik's landmark church, Hallgrimskirkja.
Streaming of the album "Iceland" (as well as the rest of the "Silver Speakers" discography) is available at silverspeakers.bandcamp.com.
