biographical info

Shane’s story isn’t new, it’s as old as soul. From The Reservoir Lounge in Toronto to the Jello Bar in Montreal, you can hear this union of human hardship and bona fide soul singing that gracefully leads the genre into a new era…

“Philips is very much his own man,
and his command of the genre -
both as a composer and a singer
of great distinction and emotional
power – is impressive.”

Greg Quill, Toronto Star

In 2006 the release of Philips’ third album “Everybody” earned Philips a spot in the Montreal Jazz festival, where the sold out crowd along side Grammy nominee Corinne Bailey Rae were taken aback by the fever and passion of Philips’ performance.

“I should have opened up for him!”

Corinne Bailey Rae, Virgin Records

Beyond a commanding presence and a voice that resonates from every fibre of his being, there are the more intangible credentials of a man with soul. It is in these that Shane’s new album, “Selling Out” roots, tapping firmly into a new era of consciousness and creativity. Taken from the pages of a Quincy Jones manual, Philips wrote and arranged a lush fifteen string orchestration and brass ensemble to create a wall of sound parallelled only by great soul recordings of the seventies. In this album lives the fullness of three years of pain and struggle, made bright with Shane’s elegance, charm, and choice to be free. We look to soul to lift us above our struggles. Philips delivers. Truly, Shane Philips is an old soul for a new era.

“Montreal-based singer Shane Philips is
definitely a throwback to ’60s R&B, though
his sound is still fresh. Philips is a welcome shot
in the arm for the local soul scene.”

Gerard Dee, Montreal Mirror
