biographical info
Emma Goldman would have dug Submission Hold. The early century anarchist, whose most famous sentiment was, “If I can’t dance to it, it’s not my revolution,” might have appreciated the Vancouver band’s dedication to spreading their message, but also their ability to get people’s asses shaking.
The stringent do-it-yourselfers have promoted the merits of solidarity for the better part of ten years. Almost 15 tours (including Europe twice) and countless releases later, Submission Hold keep their message clear. “The theme we try to push is one of respect, empathy and compassion,” says guitarist Stephe Flach. “It’s about not creating hierarchies, whether they’re in our personal lives or in the larger society.”
Time has also brought maturity to the band’s sound; elements of punk, classical, jazz, improv and folk (to name a few) create a sound that would have most old school punk rockers scratching their mohawks. – Jason Schreurs
