biographical info
The indie rock trio Rebecca West was formed in Halifax in 1994 and enjoyed a short but acclaimed ride on the East Coast wave of the mid-90s. Part pop, part punk, part improvised art-rock, Rebecca West featured veteran Halifax musician and former Bubaiskull member Allison Outhit on guitar and vocals, along with bassist Lukas Pearse and drummer Dale Hussey.
"Rebecca West, "Good Advice" (Cinnamon Toast): The rest of the first-wave Halifax indie band's 1995 disc, Burners On, is rather more typical of the period than remembered. But singer Allison Outhit's arch delivery renders this bent, beguiling compendium of motherly bromides an enduring gem that still pops into my skull with amazing regularity." - Ben Rayner, Toronto Star
"Halifax-based indie rockers Rebecca West (a power trio named after the English novelist) temper their sound a bit on their second release, the 1996 EP Six More Weeks of Winter. Toning down the noise level of their debut and writing the songs collectively for the first time, the group has made a much more satisfying album. The Helium-like sense of impending menace of the opening "Bullseye" starts things on an appropriately edgy note, with each song ratcheting up the tension level another notch until the blaring "Mystery Bird" fairly explodes. After that outburst, the lulling eight-minute drone "State of Grace" is the only possible ending for the record. Quickly recorded and apparently at least partially improvised in the studio, Six More Weeks of Winter is a rough-edged but terrific slab of indie rock." - All Music Guide
