biographical info

Raleigh has been a labour of love for its three members since February of 2010. Clea Anaïs had learned music as her first language; born into a family of musicians and starting cello lessons at the age of three. In 2008 she found Brock Geiger by following the sound of his voice through the Devonian Gardens and discovering his first band performing from across a goldfish pond. It was audio love at first listen and after a year of musical courting the decision was made to make a combined effort at song writing. Matt Doherty saw the duo open for The Books at Broken City where he gave them his first freshly printed professional business card, and so became Raleigh.

Raleigh's writing grows from cold town Calgary where for eight months of the year the roads are layers of ice and the air outside makes breathing in hurt.  Winters are spent inside dreaming and writing of things that could exist somewhere life is permitted. Clea paints the rollercoaster ride key change and rhythmic surprise. Brock writes the slow and pondered, like audio wood carving wonders. The duet vocals form a dynamite exchange.  Matt’s rhythmic choices are terse and edgy like the Coffee and Cigarettes mantra he lives by. These songs unfold like road trip window frames with changing colours and lyrical themes.

Raleigh came to record at the Audities Foundation as the lucky winners of one free session from a CJSW funding drive competition. Sixty hours later (and a few new white hairs later for co-producer/engineer David Kean) they had the innards of 'New Times in Black and White': their debut album. From a collaborative approach to songwriting, deviant percussion and the melodic nuance of cello, guitar and piano, Raleigh pulses like the heartbeat of a long lost love. Interspersed duet vocals weave tales of the prairies, lust, and things lost, to name a few.  Raleigh will crawl into your consciousness if not for the melodic hooks then by the genuine performance of these musicians.
