A NEW TYPE OF ARTISTE BLAZING FIRE AROUND THE WORLD
Singjay rapper/producer Ras was born Elliott Glenford Thompson in Canada to proud Jamaican parents. Growing up listening to various forms of Rock, Soul, Blues, Country & Western and Rockers, he became deeply involved in breakdancing, grafitti, beatboxing and rapping...
Learning to play both drums and guitar Ras was also a selector from since high school. Known as Squiddy Banton, was for a long time the go to guy for Reggae among his peers. In those days basement parties were the 'real deal' opposed to clubs. Ras would frequently drop lyrics in Dancehall styles at different parties he and his crew would pass through.
During those days apart from making beats he was also the school cameraman. Juggling the multimedia mix for quite some time, he went to work for Much Music, City TV and Cable Pulse 24 in the dot com and on-air graphics department. However, before that he worked as a journalist and started the first online-urban music magainze in Canada called CONCRETE!
After those great experiences Ras found his way back to Jamaica working again in the dot com field as a multi-media director for Homeview Jamaica that included Irie FM, Hot 102, CVMTV, Reggae Sumfest and others. Not forgetting Homeview TNT (Trinidad & Tobago) and countless websites and videos for entertainers of whom he either directed or co-directed, wrote a 14 chapter, 357 page history book about Jamaica that unfortunately got shelved due to the ravage of Hurricane Ivan and produced the first and only known documentary about Reparations.
Now Ras' gone back to his first love MUSIC! So you can now call him a Ragga/Hip Hop artiste, because Ras represents both righteousness and the streets. He could be considered the Dancehall version to Canadian Rapper K-OS who is also an old friend.
His concept: riddims and positive lyrics touching issues such as crime and violence prevention, reparations, world peace, party vibes and having a good time. Showing us we can all make it without resorting to dubious means especially where Black youth are actually looking foward to jail and ultimately death.
Once you're born it's about survival and life is what we should all be dealing with
