biographical info

With a delivery described as “reminiscent of Stan Rogers”, the songs of Phyllis Sinclair speak to that part of us that we all share, the human part.  Heartfelt observations respectfully wrapped in timeless melodies to evoke the prayers of North Coast Fishers or to share the triumphs of a life truly lived. Phyllis delivers an original sound that has been fittingly described as “haunting”, "powerful", “intimate” and “beautiful”.  Masterfully, she creates songs that captivate the heart and the imagination, weaving elements of her Cree culture into the raw realities of her life experience to produce works that have earned her national and international attention. A true story-teller, Phyllis poignantly creates verbal images that gently, and respectfully transport the listener to places, times, and experiences they might not otherwise encounter. From a watery grave in The Wreck of The Dictator to the dark dregs of Main Street, she lights the way to eliminate latent shadows. Phyllis writes in a way that everyone, regardless of culture, can enjoy and relate to.

Phyllis has earned nominations from the Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards, the Aboriginal Peoples Choice Awards, and praise from numerous music publications. Penguin Eggs Magazine described her debut album Fence posts and Stones as "positively impressive".  UK Magazine, Maverick distinguished her as "a lady of conviction" for work on her follow-up album Fathomless Tales from Leviathan's Hole. She has written two top ten hits on the Canadian Aboriginal Top 30 Countdown, one making it to number one for two consecutive weeks. Her 2008 song “The Manicure” was selected by Musicians with a Cause to be included in their "Life in the Years" CD project.  Her song was selected out of over 350,000 entries. In 2010, Phyllis launched her first international music tour in Australia. Her second international tour, Dreams of the Washerwomen UK tour, commenced in 2011.  Phyllis’ music is heard world wide on folk and independent radio stations: from Stockholm to Rome, Perth to Whitehorse.  Phyllis has played folk festivals, folk clubs and other live music venues.
