Why i never log in to cbc radio 3
Every 8 months or so, i suddenly remember that i have a CBC radio 3 band page. The reason why this happens? It's never because someone says "I heard you on CBC radio3's podcast" or "I found you on CBC radio3!" I hear "I heard you on myspace" or "my friend showed me your facebook profile and it was amazing" all the time. Well, maybe "i .. deffinately saw you on myspace" more than "it was AMAZING!" Either way, every time i ever do log in here, i see the same 5 bands. Those bands are the popular bands in canada. They are featured constnatly, without end. The reason i signed up here was the (lie)promise that cbc repeatedly makes(lies), that in some way it will represent the undercurrent of canadian society, that it will cut through the commercial doggerel of mainstream culture, and provide a cross section of everything that isnt' specifically top 40. This is their mandate (i've read the WHOLE law that created the CBC... its many pages). Its a mandate that they fail to achieve.
So the reason i log in here, from time to time, is that occasionally, VERY occasionally, i see somewhere, on someone's facebook or twitter, an oblique reference to this site. And i remember "oh yeah, i think i have a profile on there."
I can't imagine that any band finds this site useful who isnt' already getting loads of radio play and has 2 well selling (25,000+) albums under their belt. It's just a promotion vehicle for popular bands. And, of course, is so becuase journalists are inherently lazy. If they weren't, they'd be musicians instead of music journalists. But because they are lazy, its easier to write about whats on the radio, than go to shows, listen to 10,000 mp3s in a week just to find one you like. Admittedly, i would HATE that job.
So 3 cheers for metric and handsome furs. I'm sure i'll be hearing a lot more about htem from CBC radio 3 over the next neverending chain of currently popular tripe.
