biographical info

In the golden age of exploration, mapmakers were often tasked with updating their charts to encompass the discovery of new land and the settlement and colonization of far-flung places. Bands often undergo a similar recharting process, and given their name, it’s appropriate that that’s definitely been the case recently for Toronto's PAPERMAPS.

The biggest change for the group, led by singer/songwriter/guitarist/producer Dean Marino, is that it has recently expanded to become a quintet. While keyboardist/vocalist Wendy Leung and drummer Bobby Lee remain in place, Todd Harrison has moved from bass to guitar and synth. Betty Dimo has come aboard on bass and vocals, and it's this super-sized lineup that features in the two latest PAPERMAPS releases: videos for "Reunion" and "Complicate Things," the first two singles from the band’s eponymous album.

In early September of 2011, PAPERMAPS filmed a music video for their second single, “Complicate Things” (remixed by producer Harry Hess) with director Sammy Ray Welch. That same week, the band released a home-made music video for its first single, “Reunion,” with footage created by fans and friends who sent clips of themselves holding signs answering the question: “If you could send a message back in time to yourself at age 16, what would you say?” Response to the “Reunion” video has been uniformly positive. “For my money, this is one of the coolest videos I’ve seen,” Ross Condit writes on the music blog INYOURSPEAKERS. “If you’re looking for inspiration from odd places, this is your ticket.”

The self-titled album that sprung “Reunion” and “Complicate Things” has garnered its share of praise and support since it was released in April 2011 by Sparks Music, from the likes of Exclaim!, !earshot/NCRA, the Montreal Mirror, I (heart) Music, NxEW, NYC-based magazine The Big Takeover, and John Sakamoto's Anti-Hit List in the Toronto Star. Papermaps debuted at #32 on the ChartAttack Top 50 Canadian campus radio charts, remaining there for 8 weeks and at #38 on the !Earshot (NCRA) Weekly Top 50 Canadian campus radio charts, peaking at #16. The album remains in the !Earshot Monthly Top 200 and is poised to remain a staple on the Canadian college radio scene. “Reunion” charted in the top 50 on Mediabase Alternative Rock Spins chart for 6 weeks, peaking at #40 and (as of this writing) remains in the top 50.

Papermaps was produced by the band’s own Dean Marino, a Toronto-based recording engineer who has logged many years behind the scenes, manning the console for artists as varied as Tokyo Police Club, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, Born Ruffians, Sweet Thing, C’MON and the Black Keys. In 2008, he began releasing his own records. PAPERMAPS was born from the group Marino assembled to recreate live versions of songs from his first solo LP, Central Meaner Street. The group gelled and morphed into PAPERMAPS, and sessions soon began for what became the self-titled album.

Now, with a new member added to the mix and their first record under their belt, Marino and PAPERMAPS have began to start work on a second album.  Meanwhile, they continue to tour and promote Papermaps. Their fall 2011 itinerary includes stops at the CMJ Music Marathon in New York, two showcases during the Halifax Pop Explosion, and club gigs in Montreal, Windsor and their hometown Toronto.

Papermaps continue to promote their album through frequent live appearances, radio interviews, the press, their blog and pre-taped TV/Youtube/Internet appearances.

Complicate Things Video Released

posted by extildepo

Back in September we filmed a performance music video for our second single, Complicate Things (as remixed by Harry Hess) under the direction of filmmaker, Sammy Ray Welch. Well, after the burning of many midnight oils we are glad to finally present to you the final cut of this video. The video features all five members of PAPERMAPS jamming live to the track (yes, we had the amps going during the performance and it was LOUD in that shipping hanger).

We hope you enjoy it.  Expect some “behind the scenes” photos soon!

Reunion (Official)

This is the "official" video for our first single, "Reunion." It's totally homemade (or rather fan-made) except for the fun stuff we did in our rehearsal space. We asked fans to send us clips of themselves answering the question: "If you could send a message back in time to yourself at age 16, what would you say?"

Complicate Things (Official)

"Complicate Things" is the follow-up to Papermap's first single and band-made video "Reunion" from their 2011 self- titled debut album. This video was directed by Sammy Ray Welch and filmed in Toronto.
