Vancouver duo and former Salmon Arm residents Kelsey Ngai
and Bonnie McGrew have released their second CD, entitled:
"A Few Years Down the Road".
Indeed the CD is already off to a good start, receiving airplay
on radio stations in BC and Ontario.
Four years ago the duo, known as Opening Axe, released "Accidental"
which lead to critical acclaim, radio airplay and unexpected high
sales. It became the highest selling album in the Shuswap, and was
purchased by fans from Brazil to Baltimore and Iowa to Switzerland.
The song Tragedy won awards and was placed in regular rotation
on select radio stations. They were named winners of the
Okanagan Grown Band Competition, their music video aired on a
nationally syndicated tv show, they were invited to play
showcases such as New Music West.
The new CD was produced by
Mike Southworth at Creativ Studios in North Vancouver. Unlike
the initial CD which was recorded over just 3 days, Bonnie and
Kelsey were able to spend weeks on each song, and the final
product took over two years to complete. "We were really happy
with how well each track was produced, and we think the album
showcases our versatility, while at the same time maintaining
the integrity of our acoustic duo" said Kelsey.
"A few Years Down the Road" highlights how the ladies have
matured as songwriters and musicians. Songs range from a
rocky "Get Ready" to the jazzie "Mess of Mine" as well as
a beautiful acoustic ballad in "So Close So Soon". The final
song, "A Few Years Down the Road" was written about leaving
home and the beauty of Kalamalka Lake, where the duo have
written some of their favorite songs over the years.
Kelsey is currently in her 4th year of studies at UBC,
focussing on music. Bonnie works in the music industry as the
assistant to a management company, which works with several
high profile musicians.
