biographical info
Northcote. (2011) – Northcote is the project of
Saskatchewan born singer/songwriter Matt Goud. A unique voice in Canada’s broad
musical aesthetic, Goud is no stranger to movement having years of North
American touring under his belt in an influential post-hardcore group all
beginning while in highschool. Since the groups disbanding in November of 2008,
Goud followed a number of different personal and musical paths, which lead to
the arrival of his debut solo effort, an EP entitled ‘Borrowed Chords, Tired
Eyes’ (‘09/Blackbox). With the new EP, Goud took to the road and continued to
build his audience across Canada while gaining experience along the way.
Touring methods included, solo in a two-door car or riding backbench in a
overflowing van of a headlining act.
His ability to connect and
adapt to a broad audience is what many say sets him apart. The material offers
a unique commentary life and its movement and stages told as an aspiring young
prairie poet. ‘I think of my writing as thoughtful but fun. ..its something I
enjoy and I think I need,’ laughs Goud.
2011 could prove to be a
year of emergence for Northcote into the broader scope of Canadian songwriters,
as he sets to release a debut full
length album entitled ‘Gather
No Dust’, slated for April 19th (Blackbox) The
record was tracked in rural Southern Ontario in November 2010 with Producer Dan
Weston (Attack in Black, Classified, Shad, City and Colour). While staying
committed to a minimal and atmospheric approach to writing and recording, Gather
No Dust fittingly ventures into new
territory both in sonics and lyrics. Goud welcomes a stack of guest players and
friends to add musical depth to ssongs about youth and the wandering involved.
The sentiments of the album are vast; from highs to lows, here’s to there’s,
and should come as no surprise since Goud claims the songwriting inspiration
occurred within a year that saw him living in Regina SK, Yellowknife NT,
Vancouver, BC., and now currently in Victoria BC. Goud is joined by John
Jeffery (drums), Tyler Schwindt (Guitar/Bass) and John Gerrard (Bass). Look for Northcote with Gather No
Dust in 2011. (Blackbox)
