biographical info

Named after Djuna Barnes’ 1930s modernist novel, Nightwood are a rock trio born and raised in Montreal, with a sound that defies simple categorization (Indie Rock? Stoner Pop? Torch Grunge?). Their lyrical songs feature arresting vocal harmonies and intertwined guitar riffs care of the two front women (best friends Amber Goodwyn and Erin Ross) and are grounded by the inimitable drumming of Jeremy MacCuish (Cotton Mouth, Parlovr). Frequently writing songs in thematic cycles, the band’s somewhat introspective songwriting process is blown to bits by their live act: a take-no-prisoners sweaty rock show complete with hollering, laughter and tossed hair.

So we’re stretching and lounging around after the nine day tour through Quebec and Ontario, petting the cats and dogs, kissing our lovers, sleeping in our beds and catching up on work at our day jobs. We have so many fun things to share, but for now we’ll stick to word associations about the different cities we’ve played in. Some more reviews from some of these places can be found on the Press page.

Pointe Claire: Line Spectra, You & Me, Clydes, memories of shad flies and adolescence, kids drinking in the side streets, pre-show soundman lectures, “the stage is a temple”

Montreal: family galore, friends galore, Postcards, Vincat, ordering food in order to drink, CD launch, trying on our new dresses and wedding tie, good sound, awesome crowd, our favorite hecklers ever!

Quebec City: German tourists, a bunch of camera flashes,QC poutine!, Erin spooning Amber, JC’s cabin-like apartment on loan, stage under the stairs, a cyclone of reverb, rapt on-lookers, general good vibe, twisty streets and pretty buildings! No one else on the bill.

Ottawa: Zaphods, Creature from the Black Lagoon pinball, drinking Black Velvet, surprise visit from our biggest “fans”, D & C’s generous apartment lending and candy-buying, beer + earplugs = Grampa Eric ; ), Michael Munnik, Shannon Rose & The Thorns

Peterborough: Awesome city!, might lose Eric and Laurel to it one day, stopped by a really old cemetery to smell the lilac bushes and read the stones, Fire Flower Revue, Ryver Road, The Only Cafe, The Spill, serious band talks over red wine, Eric dancing on a table, Amber lecturing about “good metal”, trying to eat dinner while listening to your own record, sleeping above the venue, “exploring” at night and incidentally stumbling in on a sleeping neighbor, rough morning the next day

St. Catharines: Strega, amazing food! Pasta with shrimp!, playing to the staff but then they called their friends and we played again, discussions about zines, touring and unicorns, Harper was in town the same day

Toronto: Rancho Relaxo, Tomboyfriend, The Books Elusive, being called “red wine over there” and then having red wine tongue when sticking it out during devil sign-throwing (see below), movies like Godzilla + RoboCop playing above the bar (silently), messy/sexy performance (we hope), real good people, Kensington market, discussions about CD reviews, Mexican wrestling masks, cheese shops, random post-midnight pit stop at the cemetery to keep things real?

London: Call the Office, a really rock night with Stations (the London-based band) and My Shaky Jane, tattooed sleeves, majorly tight rockin’ boys, sister-in-laws and friends!, spitting beer on My Shaky Jane (a favor), discussing “gear” and Erin’s Dean, stories about the third floor and how it’s now a different era, the most desolate shopping mall ever, Amber getting out of loading the car two nights in a row and being stuck in the “penalty box” (i.e. cramped back seat), amazing breakfast of crepes and bacon and more by Lake Erie thankyousomuch!!!

Hamilton: Casbah Lounge, parents, old friends and the baby Dylan who stole our hearts! Sarah Good, one-way streets, broken guitar strings and a shortened set, Eric walks out of the venue after throwing his sticks but he wasn’t mad, The Muppets projected onto a wall, Eric’s mum imitating Amber’s shimmy!

Various locations: Super8 camera, tunes, map reading, feelings-sharing, gassing up, being gassy, budgeting on the go, packed lunches, rock locks, sunglasses-hunting, newspaper-hunting, arguing, laughing like crazy, singing along to music, being asked NOT to sing to all the music, discussions about recording + pedals + producing, and a whole. lot. more.
