biographical info
Formed in the fall of 2008, Monuments and Statues has been writing and
playing music around Kingston ever since. Banjo-ist Geoff Reith and
cellist Nick Riordan met on a geology field trip and soon after started
making music together. Music was the primary focus of the boys' life
that fall, while secondarily they kid-napped local “geologist” musicians
into their living room to play in the band. The current lineup has
Reith along side of Mackenzie Bromstad on cello, Cass Sclauzero on
vocals, Cirisse Stephen on keys and Jason Rajsic on drums.
Their debut CD-EP Painted and Weathered (November 2009) is a banjo and
cello driven album that breaks away from standard indie-folk songs. The
band utilizes rich pop sensibilities, boy-girl harmonies and solid
instrumentation, while still maintaining their own deeply thoughtful and
innovative spin. In the following spring, Monuments and Statues
released their sophomore CD- EP (June 2010) Welcome to the Undertow.
For the new release, the band has simultaneously pushed the boundaries
of their sound while keeping true to their roots. Kingston-based label
YGK Records released both CDs.
