biographical info
Modernboys Moderngirls are either punk rockers who play soul music
or soul musicians who play punk rock. Influenced by the likes of Elvis
Costello & The Attractions, the New York Dolls, Nirvana and crates
upon crates of classic soul and punk records, Modernboys Moderngirls
are a 21st century garage soul band.
In the fall of 2009, they released their debut, ten song album, I Might As Well Break It.
The record was hailed by Canadian reviewers as one of the most
engaging, raw, rock ‘n roll records of the year. Modernboys Moderngirls
have “the kind of spirit that could make a ship full of seasick sailors
feel well enough to rock out to the point of sickness all over again”,
wrote Exclaim Magazine. Herohill, one of Canada’s top music blogs gave
out its thanks to the group for putting ” the brashness back in rock ‘n
roll”. [I Might As Well Break It] “leaves you sweat soaked, bruised and battered and remembering.”
Before they had even released their debut disc, Modernboys
Moderngirls had already been making waves with festival appearances at
Edgefest, NXNE, Halifax Pop Explosion and Canadian Music Week. The word
was getting out – this was a band you needed on your record player,
your ipod, your stereo; whatever you use to listen to music on needed
this album. But that was only half the story. This was a band you had
to go see live, where they wear their punk/soul influences on their
sleeves and according to Chart Attack Magazine “rock out like the devil
has taken them over”.
The group, formed and based in Toronto, features an international
cast, with a Spanish-born and half-Japanese lead vocalist and guitarist
(Alemany), a Venezuelan bassist (Rivas), and a hometown son on the
drums (Millius).
Akira Alemany. singer, guitarist.
