A Vancouver born musician, Melissa is a consummate professional with a
style all her own. She has produced an EP of jazz standards, a full length album of
original jazz, a pop demo album, and, most recently, a live recording. Formally
trained in both classical and jazz piano, Melissa has a music degree from UBC.
This past year, Melissa has been fortunate enough to play a series of successful
shows overseas, in Northern Ireland, and at the Jamaica Jazz and Blues
Festival. She was particularly inspired by the world music and reggae styles
she was exposed to in Jamaica, and has since been writing tunes which reflect
this new found interest. Indeed, these new tunes have become the centrepiece of
her latest album—a live recording done at Vancouver’s well-known “Jazz Cellar”. This year she is excited to return to Jamaica for the Montego Bay Jazz and Blues Festival. She also looks forward to performances in local Canadian Jazz Festivals, and is happy to announce that she will be touring in Eastern Canada for the release of Melissa Hill Live.
Over the last five years, Melissa has done a number of gigs for radio
and television. She performed on Shaw TV’s “Urban Rush”, The New VI’s “New Day”
breakfast show and CBC’s “Zed TV.” She has also been a featured guest on 600AM
‘s “Dal’s Place”. Her original songs “Wealth”, “Shadow Dance”, “Maybe” and "Sunshine" receive consistent airplay on CBC, and her cover of Cole Porter’s “I Love
Paris” enjoys regular airplay on 600AM. Most recently, her Live recording has been distributed by CBC across the country.
Melissa plays both solo shows and shows with a fantastic band. Her
seasoned quintet includes Rob Hamilton (guitar), Karen Graves (saxophone), Sam
Shoichet (bass) and Randall Stoll (drums). From composing to arranging to
producing, and with performances at major festivals in Canada, Europe, and
Asia, these musicians have done it all.
Melissa Hill is a rising talent on the Canadian music scene. A woman
destined for greatness, her music can be gentle or powerful, simple or complex,
but no matter what, it is always unforgettable.
