biographical info
Medicine Hat is the sound of falling in love: magical, uncompromising, and a bit ridiculous.
Born in a cold basement after folk songstress Nabi Loney and her young lover Tyler Bersche realized that they had written enough songs about each other to make a record, Medicine Hat became the soundtrack to the first of hopefully many love stories.
The couple enlisted Elliott Gwynne from Tyler's fabled rock band, The Canned Goods, and Michael Boyd of incendiary ska-rockers Dancehall Free For All. Both students at the Humber School of Jazz, the pair form the pulsating heartbeat of Medicine Hat. Their tightness and their oddness are two more elements essential to any good love story.
Months into existence, the quartet conscripted the magical sounds of classically trained pianist, and old friend, Emma Hewson to join their ranks.
With the five members residing in Toronto, Guelph, and Rockwood, Ontario, Medicine Hat pleasantly infuse big-city hooks, small-town crunch, and countryside charm into their fuzzed-out folk rock and dirty jazz rhythms. Preaching the poetry and prose of their unapologetic, youthful exploits, Medicine Hat delivers a live performance of biblical intensity.
Their self-titled debut, recorded with Evan Gordon (Islands, The Magic), was released in November of 2011 by Other Songs Music Company. It is the beginning of Medicine Hat's story, and they would be honoured if it could play a part in your own.
