biographical info
In February 2010, Maybe Smith left his cozy Saskatoon home for the similar comfort of a Yukon winter as the Dawson City Songwriter-in-Residence. While he was there he met JP, Jolie, Isaak, Kale, Jesse, Sarah, Kacie, Johnathon, Teresa, Billy,
Cassidy, Emily, Kiara, Jamie, Richard and Cadena--a Grade 3 class full of aspiring indie rock stars led by their teacher, the amazing Mr. Menzies. Together, Maybe Smith and the kids wrote a song called "Yukon Quest is the Best" (well, the kids did most of the writing) about the world's toughest mushing race.
Mr. Menzies' Grade 3 class likes to connect with the world. They have buddy classes in Ontario, Germany and Sierra Leone. They are responsible for the Garbage Free School campaign. Song writing is a priority. This year's songs are about the Yukon Quest, Composting and the Olympics. Contact the class at peter.menzies@yesnet.yk.ca.
Yukon Quest is the Best
The dogs are mushing
The sleds are rushing
It's almost 40 below and it's starting to get cold
The snow is glowing
The wind is blowing
The trail is oh so long but the dogs are oh so strong
The Yukon Quest is the best!
Hot chocolate keeps us warm
Coffee keeps us awake
The dogs eat fish and meat while they fight to get the lead
The Yukon Quest is the best!
Fairbanks to Whitehorse
A thousand miles to you
The Yukon Quest is the best!
