Maxim Anderson began his apprenticeship in electric bass at the age of 13. Three years later, while undergoing studies at Lionel-Groulx College, he began learning guitar and piano. He then went on to play in diverse jazz and rock formations before he began studying for his Bachelor’s degree at the University of Victoria, in 1992, specializing in double-bass performance.
Answering to an opportunity to move to Germany in 1993, he temporarily put his university studies on hold in order to learn from the great Masters of classical themselves, during which time he also continued to perform in diverse jazz and rock groups all across Europe.
Back to resume his studies in Montreal in 1996, he was first admitted to the jazz program at Concordia University, but quickly responded to the appeal of contemporary classical music, and finally graduated in that field, in 1999, with Allan Crossman as main teacher, majoring in composition and theory.
Further studies led him to do research under the tutelage of Isabelle Panneton, Michel Longtin, and Éric Morin, both at Université de Montréal and at Université Laval. Since then he has been an active composer for the local artistic scene, and continues to guest as bassist or guitarist for diverse bands at a wide variety of events.
Maxim Anderson a entamé l’étude de la guitare basse en jazz à l’âge de 13 ans. Lors d’une année aux études en musique au Collège Lionel-Groulx trois ans plus tard, il se mit à l’apprentissage de la guitare et du piano. Il joua ensuite dans plusieurs formations jazz et rock avant de commencer son baccalauréat en contrebasse classique à l’Université de Victoria en 1992.
Une opportunité d’aller étudier en Allemagne se présenta, et il y demeura deux ans durant afin de parfaire sa formation en contrebasse classique, tout en se produisant au sein de diverses formations jazz et rock en tournée en Europe.
De retour à Montréal en 1996, il continua ses études de baccalauréat à l’Université Concordia, d’abord en jazz, puis en composition classique contemporaine et en théorie, sous la tutelle principale d’Allan Crossman. Il a gradué en 1999.
Des études en propédeutique et au niveau de la maîtrise en composition l’ont emmené à travailler avec Isabelle Panneton, Michel Longtin et Éric Morin, à l’Université de Montréal ainsi qu’à l’Université Laval. Depuis, il continue de composer professionnellement pour la scène locale et de se produire en concert sur invitation.
