biographical info

Marni has been writing songs and performing for almost 20 years.  Her songs are very personal.  They are often inspired, and continually influenced by the spirit of her sister who passed away.
As a young person, she studied classical piano and violin.  Inspired by a close friend, she later picked up guitar.  More recently, she has been studying West African drum and dance.  Growing up, she heard her Dad drumming on the steering wheel and on the kitchen table, so rhythm was always in her blood.
Marni uses Hatha Yoga techniques to enrich her singing voice.  For Marni, Yoga is a tool that helps her to get in touch with a deeper self, connected to the natural world.  This in turn becomes the basis and inspiration for song-writing.
Her songs are influenced by traditional and contemporary jazz, African, folk, roots, rock and RnB.  Marni is especially inspired by music that fuses several styles together.  Growing up, she regularly scoured her parents’ record collection which included everything from James Brown, Sly and the Family Stone and WAR to Carol King, Cat Stevens and Van Morrison.
Her songs are rhythmically-driven stories drawn from a wealth of personal and family memories.  Marni is the 3rd generation of Jewish immigrants who came to Canada on a boat to escape anti-Semitism in Russia.
For Marni, writing and performing songs is a powerful way to share music as a spiritual conduit for healing.
