Indian Town – Mark Nabess Single 2009

Mark Nabess was born in The Pas, MB December 1965 becoming a small part of a large musical family. Mark’s father and uncles were already steeped in musical tradition dating back generations. Uncle Charles and Don were already touring Canada and Europe with Three Penny Opera, a musical act from The Pas that found some small musical success after relocating to Winnipeg in the late 60’s. Mark’s father and several other uncles were blue collar types that entertained friends and family during weekend get-togethers and on holidays. Needless to say Mark was immersed in music from an early age.

During his teenage years Mark’s siblings became familiar with their own musical aspirations and as they pursued they’re muse, Mark watched and became even more inclined to follow the artistic ways when it pertained to music, forming a group with two cousins of the same age, they even wrote their first song and performed it on stage live on the radio. They were 12 and 13 years old at the time. Teenage angst set in and we’ll omit some of the finer details of this period in Mark’s life.

Mark Nabess began his musical journey as an adult doing sound tech for Ernest Monias and Edward Gamblin, two notably semi-famous and respected musicians from northern Manitoba. During this time in the late 80’s, and while as rhythm guitar and back up singer for Ed Gamblin, he cut his first demo in Norway House in a shack outside Gamblin’s residence. He then embarked on a short stint with a band he started called the Derelicts but soon quit to form Black Saddle, his first real road-band. Mark and future Peacemaker drummer, Shawn Parenteau travelled the country-rock circuit with Nabess’ brother, the late Fred ‘Fingers’ Nabess on lead, Greg Mentuck on second lead and Patrick ‘PJ’ Jacobson on the bass. Nabess, Mentuck and Parenteau soon left to form Peacemaker picking up Donny Ducharme on Bass and Jesse Green on lead guitar along the way. Mentuck soon departed the band and Nabess, Parenteau, Ducharme and Green carried on as the original line-up of Peacemaker until the bands demise in 2001.

Mark Nabess resurfaced in 2008 as a solo-act releasing a self titled acoustic demo on MySpace under the name Jack Rabbit. In 2009 he teamed up with producer Wayne Chartrand of Pangia Studios in Winnipeg and together they recorded and produced the first single ‘Indian Town’ on the upcoming Mark Nabess full length CD. The song ‘Indian Town’ which was inspired by the many northern towns in Manitoba and Canada that Nabess has performed over the years went Number 1 on the National Aboriginal Top 30 on Native Communications Inc., October 24th, 2009. Mark Nabess is currently on tour in support of the single and is recording the soon-to-be-released full length CD.
