biographical info
In 14 years this bi-continental artist has notched up award-winning pop songs, Japanese and North American tours, and numerous film credits. Her current work is her most crucial and magnetic yet: Filmic, shameless songs unifying beautiful pop, strange country, indie soul and splintered rock.
It started when she stole a guitar and left town. Barely able to play at the time, she formed chords she couldn't name and started fashioning them into songs, playing a few quiet shows here and there, and recording whenever the opportunity arose.
Eventually there were bands and the records she made with them, and a nod from Australia’s national youth broadcaster Triple J – who named her as a winner of their Unearthed competition alongside Missy Higgins and Silverchair. Finally, there was the moment she realised the thing she had looked everywhere for, from the peninsula, to the city, all along the eastern seaboard, through the dark alleys of Ni Chome and Yutenji, throughout the Pacific northwest, California and the midwest, was back where she began.
Now back in hometown Melbourne for a stint, she has assembled a six piece band (interestingly, a mix of her musical heroes, her family, and her childhood friends), and is working on her first full length album. When asked why it took this long, she’s at first evasive, but then the answer bursts out like it is has been stored too long under pressure “Its been like a walk home late at night in the shadows. I’ve stayed out of sight. I’ve behaved like I had something to hide from. But finally, I have reached the point of not being able to contain it anymore”.
While her ear for pop hooks is undeniable, the widescreen sensibility she uses to realize her songs has made LOVEPROOF an irresistible misfit in the musical landscape.
