biographical info
Homegrown Alberta artist Kelly Girvan, grew up in the northern farming community of Hines Creek. Relocating to Duncan, BC four years ago, she began playing guitar and writing songs about her youth, relationships, nature and human emotions
Musical influences in her debut album "Pieces of the Puzzle", reflect sounds from early Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Iris Dement and Sheryl Crow mixed with Appalachian old time. The instruments are traditional Bluegrass: upright bass, banjo, guitar and mandolin played by multi-instrumentalist Jeff Ellis, hailing from Virginia. Kelly's voice has been described as "indie"; the album mixed with traditional instruments delicately blends both old and new genres. The songwriting captures heartache, hope, love and prairie roads, as well as life by the ocean. Early experiences during family gatherings in her youth inspired Kelly to sing her first harmonies with her aunts and play the spoons, while the men of the family played guitars and fiddles.
When she is not performing, Kelly is a music teacher at a local elementary school and holds a Bachelor of Education from the University of Alberta. She has two beautiful daughters, loves dancing, photography, writing, and spending time with friends and family. She plays at local venues in the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island.
