A History of Kathouse and the Gold Dust Women...
The history of Kathouse and the Gold Dust Women begins at Huron University College in London, Ontario. Huron College first opened its doors to women students in the Faculty of Arts in 1957. Already a distinguished institute of higher learning, Huron College soon found itself attracting superior students of the female persuasion. Precocious, vivacious, talented, and of course, attractive, these women excelled in academics, arts, and archery. At that time, the Huron Ladies’ Leisure Club provided the only opportunity for young Huronian women to cement the bonds of Sisterhood. Due to the relative novelty of women in Academia, Mentor Figures—with the exception of Grand Matriarch Catherine Ridley—were even harder to chance upon. To espy one was cause for great celebration (as it remains today).
A Turning Point:
The fall term of 2004 at the College saw a group of four young women become ‘fast friends.’ Brassy, bold, brazen, these women were also sassy, classy (with a “C”), and chic. Their work has been celebrated as a fine blend of social satire with the right touch of intellectual irreverence. Feminist in spirit, these young women were the New Women of the 21st Century; each one like the best avant-gardiste: ahead of her time!
They came to form the faux-sorority Sigma Chi Gamma (Scandalous Career Girls), known as Kathouse and the Gold Dust Women in the music world.
