NEW ALBUM: TRANSGRESSION TRAIL is available at stores across Canada through Scratch Records

Nobody owns Joey Only.  He plays by his own rules and works for everything he has.  At just 31 years old he's traveled Canada relentlessly as a musician since 1996, playing 700 shows of his own songs since 2001.  Prolific as both a songwriter and musical and social activist, Joey Only’s biography reads like a list of immeasurable feats.  This year has released his best album “Transgression Trail” with producers Corwin Fox and Steve Loree. The Joey Only Outlaw Band completed extensive tours across Canada to promote this hot new album appearing with Fred Eaglesmith, Buffy St.Marie and the mainstages of numerous festivals.  It's destined to be a classic album from a history making band after spending six weeks on Earshots top 10 folk/roots/blues Canada wide radio charts, and two weeks in the #2 spot.

Joey plays a mean solo show but prefers to be seen with his seven piece band called Joey Only Outlaw Band.  He’s hosted Sound Resistance on Vancouver's Co-op Radio Station CFRO 102.7FM since 2003.  Best known as a songwriter and guitarist Joey also moonlights as a studio musician capable of playing pedal steel guitar, percussion, upright or electric bass, harmonica and all manner of vocal arrangements.  The Outlaws play a professional show rarely stopping for breath between songs, their goal is to outplay other bands putting on three hour shows without set breaks that leave crowds in a dancing frenzy.

Joey Only has climbed 80 mountains, is an experienced wilderness guide, has chased tornadoes, been struck by lightning, nearly died of tuberculosis, had vocal surgery, smashed his face, been lost in the barrens, and incarcerated for activism.  He was publicly deemed a terrorist by Victoria BC police in this way.  He's hitchhiked 50,000km as a youth, played a 1000 shows in different bands, failed out of University, kicked out of seminary, tried to ride a moose and fought an aggressive mother bear.  Joey has been a published author on an array of subjects appearing in BC Musician Magazine, MapleLeafs.com and in newspapers across the country.  Joey is pro-cannabis advocate, a downtown eastside Vancouver healthcare worker and still thinks the Leafs will win the Cup any day now.  He does things that no Canadian musician has ever done and is best compared to a modern version of Woody Guthrie.

POSITIVE REVIEWS:
"An anarchist sort of Stomping Tom Connors," Bob Nixon, Canada Now, CBC News.

"The voice of the movement," Dr. Heidi Rimke PHD, professor of sociology at the University of Winnipeg

"If you smoke enough pot you will swear you are out riding the range with Joey Only and his gang of freak outlaws." Chris Walter, punk fiction writer in Vancouver about the new Joey Only Outlaw Band CD.

"...sounds a bit like a defiantly DIY version of a young Bob Dylan, this being partly because of Onlys world-weary voice and partly because of his phrasing," Mike Usinger, Music editor of the Georgia Straight, August 2005.

"In our humble opinion he might be the next Utah Philips," 16th Annual Under the Volcano programme 2005.

"Rarely have I heard a band with so much musical talent combined with so much integrity. The Joey Only Outlaw Band have left a huge impact on me and the rest of the lucky folk who chanced upon them in Kelowna (BC) this October," Sarah Williard, CIRO Program Director.

"Joey comes from the Marmora area, a place that's only got two names in the phone book...and Only is one of them," Washboard Hank.

"Joining Washboard Hank is Vancouver's own Joey Only-that is if the pig magnet doesn't get arrested on the way to the show," Georgia Straight 'Straight Choices" section October 26th, 2006.

"Joey Only a textbook example of effective activism,"title of Edmonton SEE Magazine article in May 2006.

"Joey Only provided a clearcutting tone to help project the bands messages, whether they were political or an invitation to party. He also fused his country/bluegrass sound with his advanced skills by playing very nice solos," Dheni Walsh, Capilano College Courier, February 2007.

"Craziest band to ever play here," the staff at the Palomino Smokehouse in Calgary

"Best show the Ironwood (Calgary) has seen in a long time," Steve Coffey (of Steve Coffey & the Lokels 2009)

"The OUTLAWS are the real deal! Last thursday at the Rose & Crown in Banff, 3 hours non-stop boot-thumping kung fu country," Kenny Konrad, a Kootenay roots musician.

"I've watched Joey Only evolve over the course of several years. He's remained true to his values, never lost sight of the injustices we struggle together to overcome. Joey's a devoted activist for real change, and an awesome musician too," Janine Bandcroft, CFUV radio Victoria BC.

"The Joey Only Outlaw Band love what they do, you can see it in their faces and the way they communicate with each other on stage...Joey steers the ride one honkey tonk step at a time and the crowd stomps their feet with every beat," Jason Pawlett of CITR Radio's Friday Sunrise and blogs at www.vanmusic.ca.

"Imagine world-class shit-kicker Hank III channelling Bob Dylan circa "Subterranean Homesick Blues" while riffing on Geoff Mack’s "I’ve Been Everywhere" . It’s almost enough to make you want to get on a bus," Georgia Sraight, Instant Playlist review of the song Greyhoundin Guitar Man off the Transgression Trail album.

"For many modern musicians, it’s a painstaking process to establish a niche or an image that will separate them from the crowd. But for Dr. Joey Only the image was never an effort; it just was," Lindsay Wilson, Beatroute Magazine, province-wide in Alberta, July 2010.

"Perhaps the kickinest, boot-thumpinest kung-fu country CD to come through the station in years, perhaps ever," Scott McWhinne, The Labour Show on CFRU 93.3FM, Guelph Ontario, July 2010.

"For the seven-piece cowpunk band from Vancouver, hitting the road means getting out there and staying out there for months on end. This summer sees the group performing almost every day for the next three months in support of a new album, Transgression Trail," Mike Angus, VUE Weekly, Edmonton Alberta, June 2010.

"Joey Only sounded like Hank Williams, Stompin’ Tom Connors, Bob Dylan and the finalists of an auctioneer’s competition thrown into a blender full of amphetamines," Richard Amery, L.A. Beat, Lethbridge Alberta, June 2010.

SPRING NEWS: booking RESTARTS, EVAN GREER and retooling the OUTLAW BAND!

posted by Joey Only

UPCOMING JOEY ONLY SHOWS:

-MONDAY MARCH 14th: VANCOUVER BC: THE RAILWAY CLUB: 579 DUNSMUIR: This is a pilot run for what will hopefully become a monthly gig for me at the Railway Club.  Part of the show is going to feature an IN THE ROUND with pre-arranged musicians, however walk ins will be considered to take part in the challenge.  Five singer songwriters will take the stage and be given a broad topic to sing about, opportunities will go around on an equal footing.  Prizes available for both audience and participating musicians.

-APRIL 11th: VANCOUVER BC: THE RAILWAY CLUB: 579 DUNSMUIR: Welcoming EVAN GREER from RIOTFOLK to the Railway Club.  Riotfolk is an amazing group of young radical singer songwriters who have banded together as a collective rather than join a record label.  Evan Greer is immensely talented at writing and performing with substantially intelligent lyrics.

BOOKING THE RESTARTS A WESTERN CANADA TOUR WITH REBEL SPELL

I am currently in the middle of booking my favorite DIY punk band shows around Western Canada, they are the RESTARTS from London UK.  Tour will start on March 31st in Vancouver when they play at Funky Winkerbeans.  They will be hitting the island, then motoring up to Prince George, across to Jasper and Edmonton…then down to Calgary and into the Kootenays.  Official tour calendar will be released on March 5th so tune in to  www.joeyonly.com) for updated information on a show which I know will be .  (www.restarts.co.uk)

REBUILDING THE OUTLAW BAND

ATTENTION ALL OUTLAW BAND FANS! I am rebuilding the band right now! Zinger is leaving for India for a year, Justine joined Fred Eaglesmith and so on and so on. So I am taking this chance to rebuild the Outlaw Band before I record my next album CENTRAL ONTARIO TORNADO.

I have no particular idea in mind for what the new band would look like, I will try anyone out. I have a full band in ONTARIO who are my east coast Outlaws…but need a western Canada band. I have festivals this summer to play and a monthly gig at the Railway Club I am likely to start…but no real plans for extensive touring this year!! So we have a lot of time to build the show for 2012 when I release the next album…we will play a minimum of 100 after that release and the band will need to know a minimum of 50 songs. So think about it, I need dedicated players!! We will need to be able to play on a professional level, if you have what it takes you e-mail me. I’ve done 1000 shows, and 400 with the original Outlaw Band line-up…this is not a fool around garage band…this is the real deal!–joey
