biographical info
Jonny’s passion for hip-hop and all of its aspects began at an early age and has been the backbone of their long-term friendship. Influences range from Mos Def, to Wynton Marsalis, to the Doors and everything in between. Although hip-hop is the focus of Jonny’s energy, they draw inspiration from a diverse variety of music. Their music reflects the complexity of classic jazz, the rhythms explored by funk, the powerful effects refined by psychedelic rock, and the intensity of modern electronica.
Presently, the members of Jonny live together in a Calgary home, with a professional in-house recording studio. An enormous amount of time and money has been invested into this endeavor. Through this effort they hope to provide local talent with an environment and the tools to pursue their music professionally.
Top Shelf artists are not only dedicated to their own musical careers, but also to those of the other artists in their community. Jonny Sootentai has had the pleasure of collaborating with some of North America’s most innovative musicians. They range from Sleep (Old Dominion/Chicharones), Saratonin (Frek Sho), Urban Farmers, Dragon Fli Empire, to reggae Juno award winner Leroy Brown.
