biographical info

Hot Little Rocket are one of the longest running and most beloved bands ever to emerge from the Calgary rock and roll scene. For over ten years their unforgettable songs and jarring live performances have stuck in the ears and hearts of indie rockers all across the country.

They've piled up road experience like some kind of loud, skinny hockey franchise - back and forth across Canada more times than they can count (sharing the stage with Spoon, Modest Mouse, The Weakerthans, The Constantines, Eric's Trip and Hot Hot Heat along the way). They packed themselves and their guitars across the Pacific Ocean for a two and a half week residency in Beijing, playing to tens of thousands of outdoor festival-goers, the Canadian consulate, and even a bar full of Chinese skinheads (no bones broken, no black eyes). Until someone else claims otherwise, they're calling themselves the first Canadian indie band to ever play in China.

After the initial release of Laika in 2000, their second LP Danish Documentary (2001, endearing records) reached #17 on the Earshot national charts. FFWD Magazine called their third album Our Work and Why We Do It (2003, Flemish Eye) "the best record ever made in Calgary". This album marked their first entry into Earshot's top ten, and peaked nationally at #9.

In February of 2006 Hot Little Rocket spent a week in Chicago with legendary recording engineer Steve Albini (Nirvana, Pixies, PJ Harvey, The Stooges... that Steve Albini) and came back with their best album to date (not to mention becoming much better poker players). "How To Lose Everything" was released June 2007 by File Under: Music records. That signature 'Albini' sound captures the strength of HLR's stage show like never before, leaving the listener with the overwhelming feeling that the band is about to fall off the stage on top of them. Hot Little Rocket will be retiring their game jersey Sept. 19th 2009 with a final celebration of their 11 years together. As a final parting gift they will be releasing a new 12 song self titled CD. You can catch members of the band in new projects Heat-ray, extra happy ghost!!! and Key to the City.

So this is the deal.... you read it here first or maybe on facebook or the HLR website cause I'm just going to repost this the same way. This is the official word or press release or whatever you want to refer to it as. Yes... Hot Little Rocket will be releasing a new album this summer/fall. We recorded 12 new songs with 2 of our favourite people, Lorrie Matheson and Dave Alcock. The tentative release date will more than likely be our 11th anniversary in September because we took way too long to finalize the details. And yes, the plan is for the band to split up, sell the house, disrupt the kid's lives and move to opposite sides of the island. In reality it really just frees up some evenings so we can move on with other projects that are in the works. Oh yah, another good reason why we are breaking up is because we have officially run out of things to talk about in the van... So this is going to be the way it rolls out.... Aaron will continue on with "Heat-Ray" who have a new record out this summer, Matt will release his solo venture this summer as "extra happy ghost!!!" I will continue playing with "Key to the City" and yes, we also have a new record coming out this summer.... that's right one band tied to 4 new records and all this summer....FYI, Andrew is also in the process of gathering some crazed individuals to rock some roll (name and lineup not released at press time)... so you really want to know why we are breaking up, because breakups mean much more hard feelings, anger and depression....and anger and depression leads to more creativity, and more creativity leads to more records. So more records will be made by Hot Little Rocket... maybe not in this form but in many many other mutations.... and aren't mutants just way cooler... Wolverine kicked some serious ass! To summarize, we are breaking up and we are also releasing a new record... That's it... I said it. Done. It's out there! We will have a few shows coming up to pay back some favours, and also to have some serious fun. We will be at Sledisland this summer and will also be playing an outdoor show for CJSW's Olympic Plaza Concert Series. The last Hot Little Rocket show ever/ CD release party / Mega Merch sell off will be announced soon. We really love you guys!
