...sometimes-whimsical and aggressive lyrics, the result is undoubtedly distinct. The three primary members of the group, Jen Clarke, Andrew Gormley, and Brad Luknowsky, self-recorded a low-fi demo in the spring of 2005 with a drum machine. After dispersing copies around the Halifax scene, they recruited well-seasoned drum veteran, Sean MacGillivray. This demo charted in the top ten on the local independent radio charts (earshot charts, ckdu, Halifax NS). They have played with a wide variety of local bands (Dog Day, The Hemingways) proving the spectrum of their appeal, garnering approval from rock/pop and punk audiences alike. Although comparatively categorized in the Halifax scene as a ‘new band’ their captivatingly tight and vivacious live shows have caught the ears and attention of local promoters who chose them as complimentary to open for touring bands Immaculate Machine (Victoria, BC) and controller.controller (Toronto, ON). They were also chosen to be featured in both the ECMA alternative show ‘(no)case’ (February 2006) and Halifax’s ‘Ju(no) Alternative showcase’ (March 2006). The verdict is in: ‘HOTSHOTROBOT brings new hope to the scene: [proving that] there are still some bands out there with some sort of individuality and distinct flavor’ (Dalhousie Gazette, March 2006). The momentum of the robot is surely just beginning, as critics declare HOTSHOTROBOT as a band ‘to keep an eye on’ (Chartattack, December 2005) and as ‘up-and -comers’ (The Coast, April, 2006).
