biographical info

Glenn Sutter ('sue-ter') is a gentle but fiery folk-rocker from Regina, Saskatchewan. Drawing on deep prairie roots and classical training, he uses thoughtful lyrics and moving melodies to express ideas about nature, love, and the human condition. As one fan put it, he is "intelligent and emotional - the real thing!"

Glenn grew up in the 1970s as part of musical family in Souris, Manitoba, drawing inspiration from small-town life, sweeping prairie landscapes, and all sorts of music, especially the Beatles, the Stones, and Neil Young. His main influences now include Blue Rodeo, John Hiatt, Steve Earle, and John Prine.

After supporting other musicians for over 20 years, Glenn launched his critically acclaimed debut CD “All You Need” in 2008, with award-winning producer David j Taylor. Since then, his music has been featured on many daytime radio programs, including community radio shows in Regina and Moose Jaw, and a provincial Earth Day show  on CBC Radio1. He has also released a live 2010 album called “Seeds” with Brett Dolter (Library Voices, B.D. Willoughby) as a fundraiser for the community gardens in North Central Regina.

In September 2010, Glenn received nationwide acclaim when his tune "Weight of the World" was chosen winner and official Saskatchewan Song on David Suzuki's "Playlist for the Planet" (CBC Radio3).  Other winning songs include tracks by Canadian music mainstays Danny Michel, Paper Lions, and Delhi 2 Dublin.  The official iTunes compilation was released in March 2011 by Universal Music and features the 11 winning song entries alongside tracks by Canadian music legends Bruce Cockburn, Gordon Lightfoot, Sarah McLachlan and current/multiple Juno award winners LIGHTS and Johnny Reid.

In January 2011, another one of Glenn’s songs, called “In Days of Loneliness,” attracted province-wide attention when it was short-listed for the book “Essex County” as part of the Canada Reads Soundtrack (CBC Radio1). Glenn's music was also singled out in April 2011,when he won a "Collective Works Award" through the International Song of the Year contest, for submissions that showed "consistency in songwriting excellence across various works."

With a growing catalogue of compelling and memorable songs, Glenn has been attracting fans online and wherever he plays.  Most recently, he has been playing house concerts and festival shows across the prairies, including workshop and main stage performances at the Cathedral Village Arts Festival and the Brandon Folk Festival. He will soon be releasing a second solo album called "Sweet Happiness."

I've been getting some great feedback about my new album!  Here's a recent press release that describes what went into it. - Glenn

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Jan 11, 2012

Glenn Sutter is proud to announce the release of his second full-length solo album Sweet Happiness, a collection of memorable folk-rock tunes about searching and discovery.  "I'm really happy with the way this project came together," says Sutter.  "The whole band bought into the idea of going for an organic, off-the-floor sound, and that's what we got."

Recorded in September at Twisted Pair Studios, with production and engineering by the award-winning David j Taylor, the 14-track album features stellar performances by Taylor on guitar, keys and backing vocals, Rebecca Lascue on backing vocals and percussion, Michael Paul on bass, Cal Harle on drums, and Joyce Belcher on flute.  Together, they bring Sutter's provocative lyrics and melodies to life, from the haunting love song Wait, to the beautifully crafted Sunlight After Rain.

"I was glad to have the chance to cut loose on the piano for some of these tunes," Sutter notes. "I love writing and performing on the guitar, but the piano will always be my best friend since I've been playing it since I was 4 years old.  I also like the way That River Rising came out.  I wrote it for folks affected by the 2011 floods, including my elderly mom who still lives by the Souris River."

Sutter grew up in the 1970s as part of a musical family in Souris, Manitoba, drawing inspiration from small-town life, sweeping prairie landscapes, and all sorts of music, especially the Beatles, the Stones, and Neil Young. His main influences now include Blue Rodeo, John Hiatt, Steve Earle, and John Prine.

Sweet Happiness follows on the 2008 release of Sutter's debut cd All You Need and the 2010 live album Seeds, a collaboration with Brett Dolter (B.D. Willoughby, Library Voices) to raise money for the community gardens in North Central Regina.

Over the next few months, Sutter will be doing a tour of the prairies to promote his new cd, with a release show in Regina at the end of March. The full album and individual tracks are now available for sale directly from him or via iTunes and CDBaby at www.glennsutter.com/music.
